Dog training homework: what to look for

Browse matching businesses

Dog training homework is the practice you do between lessons to make a skill useful in everyday life. It should be clear enough to follow, small enough to fit your routine and connected to the next stage of training. Before leaving a lesson, make sure you know which exercise matters most and how to begin it at home.

Useful homework teaches the handler as well as the dog. Ask the instructor to watch you try the exercise and explain any adjustment before you practice alone. Seeing the trainer demonstrate a skill is helpful, but your own rehearsal shows whether the instructions are clear.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How much practice is expected between lessons?
  • Can I share questions or video of exercises that are difficult?
Explore the guide6 sections

Agree on a realistic practice commitment

Tell the trainer how much time you can reliably make available and who will do the practice. Ask how to divide the work into manageable opportunities rather than assuming that one long session is required. If your week changes, find out which exercise to prioritize and which can wait.

Use familiar routines only when they match the trainer’s plan. A quiet hallway may be a suitable starting place for one skill, while a busy walk may be too difficult for the same dog. Confirm the location and level of distraction so the homework begins at an achievable point.

Use training handouts to guide real-life practice

Ask for a clear description of the response you are rewarding, the cue you are using and when the exercise ends. If several family members help, use the same instructions. Small differences in hand signals, words or starting positions can make the task harder to understand.

Practice the version demonstrated in the lesson before adding distance, duration or distractions. If you are unsure whether to advance, record what happened and ask the trainer. The aim is to build understanding through workable steps, not to see how difficult a task your dog can tolerate.

Bring useful feedback to the next lesson

Keep notes brief and specific. Instead of saying the homework failed, describe where you practiced, what your dog did and what changed from the successful attempt. For example, note that the exercise worked in the kitchen but became difficult when someone opened the front door.

Ask whether the instructor accepts video and what they need to see. A short ordinary attempt can show timing and setup more clearly than a written description. Follow the provider’s sharing process and avoid staging a difficult situation simply to capture a problem.

Adjust when life gets in the way

If you missed practice, tell the trainer plainly so the next lesson can start at the right level. Repeating a foundation is more useful than progressing on the assumption that it is established. Ask for a simpler homework plan if the original commitment was unrealistic.

If your dog seems uncomfortable or the task is consistently too difficult, stop that attempt and contact the trainer about an adjustment. Homework should have a clear route for questions, especially when it forms part of a more involved behavior program.

Turn class exercises into dog training at home

Ask your dog trainer to connect homework to an ordinary situation. If dog training classes introduce a sit cue, explain whether you need that skill at a doorway, before fitting the leash or in another routine. The instructor can help distinguish learning the response in a quiet space from using it when something exciting is happening.

A puppy’s homework may involve handling practice, household routines or suitable socialization experiences alongside basic obedience. Ask which activities are appropriate for your puppy and how the instructor wants you to record them. More exposure is not automatically better practice; the setting should match the plan discussed in your lesson.

When your dog learns a response, ask how to reinforce it clearly and when to change the exercise. Avoid altering several parts of the task at once. For example, changing the handler, room and distraction level together makes it harder to tell which difference caused difficulty.

Keep a useful homework record

A simple record can name the exercise, location, distraction and one observation. For example: leash exercise in the hallway; another person walked past; the dog turned away from the handler. This tells the trainer more than a pass or fail label and helps them choose the next step.

Bring questions from home to group classes even when the class itself went well. Ask which difficulty can be addressed during normal feedback time and which needs a separate review. Your notes should help the trainer adjust the training sessions to the actual work you and your dog are doing.

Most people don't call because their dog can't sit. They call because the walk has become something they dread and the front door has become an event. HOME Dog Training is a small training practice in Rockwall. Charles, Laura, and Wyatt are the trainers here , the same hands on every dog, start to finish. No staff, no handoffs. We cap at seven dogs at a time and train in a home, not a facility. We build four things, in this order: Habits, Obedience, Manners, Engagement. There is a big difference between a dog obeying a command and a dog that didn't need one. Clarity, not pressure. Training that expands your dog's world instead of shrinking it. Serving the Rockwall area and North & East Dallas areas.

Frequently asked questions

More detail to help you choose and prepare.

How much dog training homework should I expect?

It depends on the course, skill and household. Ask the instructor for a practical commitment and explain your limits before enrollment. The quality and suitability of the practice matter alongside how often you do it.

What if my dog can do the exercise in class but not at home?

Describe the differences in setting, distractions and handling. Ask the trainer to help you recreate an easier starting point at home. Do not assume the dog understands the same task equally well in every location.
