Consider physical readiness and technique

Flyball involves repeated acceleration, jumping and turning. Discuss the dog’s age, fitness and any health limitations, with veterinary advice where appropriate. A foundations group may teach useful pieces without asking a young or inexperienced dog to perform full-speed repetitions. Ask how the instructor adapts equipment and the number of turns within a session.

Observe the surface, equipment stability and space around the working lanes. Good practice includes breaks and attention to how the dog moves, not just enthusiasm for another run. How a flyball race works

In the North American Flyball Association format, two teams of four dogs race in parallel lanes. Each dog travels over four hurdles, activates the flyball box, collects the released ball and returns over the hurdles. The next dog begins its leg as the returning dog completes the required crossing. The team’s result depends on clean work and coordinated passing as well as speed.

This is a team sport in which dogs and handlers learn a shared routine. Avoid increasing jump height or speed simply because a dog is enthusiastic. What flyball teams practice before a tournament

The start line and the return are as important as the box. In a training exercise, the handler may first reward a clear recall while the dog carries the ball, then add the agreed lane elements gradually. Dog trainers should help you identify whether an error comes from the retrieve, a missed hurdle, distraction or confusion about the next step. Repeating a whole race does not isolate that problem.

At a flyball competition, the first team to complete the required clean relay wins the heat under the applicable rules. The smallest dog on the team can affect jump-height calculations, so small dogs and mixed-breed dogs are part of many flyball teams.
