Dog jumping training helps a dog approach people without jumping up, crowding or grabbing clothing. The first step is deciding what a successful greeting looks like in your household. Four feet on the floor may be enough; another dog may benefit from waiting on a mat while a visitor enters.
Tell your trainer who your dog jumps on and when it happens. Arrivals at the front door, greetings on walks and excitement when a family member returns create different training setups. Include whether the dog is loose, on leash or behind a barrier, and what people usually do in response.
Dogs may find attention, movement and access to a person rewarding. Even pushing a dog away can become part of an exciting interaction for some individuals. If one person welcomes jumping while another objects, the dog receives inconsistent information about the greeting.
Agree on a household rule before practice. Decide which behavior will earn attention and how people will prevent a jump from reaching someone. Consistency does not mean every greeting must look formal. It means the dog has a clear, repeatable route to the interaction you want them to enjoy.
Practice with a familiar person in a quiet setting. Reward an approach with four feet down or another comfortable position. Keep the interaction brief and easy enough that the dog can repeat it successfully. A sit can be useful, but forcing a sit while the dog is overwhelmed may add confusion rather than improve the greeting.
Reward placement matters. Delivering low enough for the dog to remain on the floor can support the desired position. If your dog repeatedly springs up toward your hand, ask the instructor to adjust your timing and delivery. Start with a short calm moment rather than waiting for a long perfect greeting.
A gate can let a visitor enter while the dog has a clear boundary. A suitably handled leash may also help prevent access, provided it is not used to jerk the dog or hold them in a frightening close interaction. Choose the setup with your trainer based on the dog's comfort and your home layout.
Management makes practice possible while the skill develops. It is especially useful when a visitor cannot follow detailed instructions or when you need to carry items through the door. Set it up before the arrival. Trying to find a leash after an excited dog is already jumping creates a much harder task.
A helper can approach, pause and retreat according to the training plan. This lets you adjust how exciting the greeting becomes and reward successful moments. Begin with a person the dog can cope with, then gradually vary the person, their movement or the location.
Only change one challenge at a time. A familiar person standing still is different from a new guest speaking excitedly and bending toward the dog. Ask the trainer how to make the next repetition easier if feet leave the floor. Repeatedly setting up the same jump and correcting afterward misses the chance to teach a clearer alternative.
Do not rely on an unproven greeting skill to protect someone who could be knocked over or frightened. Use suitable separation and adult supervision. Children should not be responsible for controlling an excited dog or acting as training helpers in a risky setup.
A dog does not need to greet every person who arrives or passes on a walk. A calm wait at a comfortable distance can be a successful outcome. If greeting problems include freezing, growling, snapping or attempts to avoid contact, discuss those details separately. The dog may need behavior support rather than simply a lesson in sitting for attention.
Practice the complete sequence: a person arrives, the dog moves to the planned place or approaches appropriately, interaction happens and the greeting ends. Many dogs manage the first moment but become excited again when the person moves through the room. Include that transition as a separate part of practice.
Track what is improving and what still triggers jumping. Perhaps greetings with household members are easier while guests carrying bags remain difficult. That distinction tells the trainer what to arrange next. Ask for a routine that everyone can carry out and for guidance on maintaining it when visitors do not know the training plan.
A puppy may jump on people to reach their hands or faces, and the attention can make that greeting worth repeating. Teach your dog an easier way to get attention before the puppy becomes too excited. Reward an approach with four paws on the floor, briefly interact and then pause so the next repetition starts calmly.
If you ask the dog to sit, check that the position is comfortable and familiar. You can also reinforce standing with each paw on the ground. The objective is to stop jumping on people by making an alternative clear, not to demand a formal position from every puppy. Keep visitors' movements simple while the skill develops.
When the dog jumps during a greeting, the helper should follow the agreed plan to pause interaction safely. Reset to an easier approach rather than repeatedly pushing the dog off and immediately starting the same exciting exchange. Ask your dog trainer to coach the person as well as the dog.
A dog who can greet one calm adult may still need separate practice with new people, moving bags or someone rising from a chair. Prevent access when the situation exceeds the skill already learned. This protects visitors and keeps dog training focused on successful practice instead of testing the same failure repeatedly.
