Makeup lessons: what to look for

Browse matching businesses

Makeup dog training lessons help you catch up after a missed class, but the replacement may take a different form. Another group session, a brief individual review, a video lesson and written homework all provide different levels of instruction. Ask exactly what the provider offers before enrolling in a course.

The most useful makeup arrangement helps you understand what you missed and rejoin the program at an appropriate point. Simply attending any spare class may not cover the same foundation skills or give you the feedback you need.

Questions to ask before booking

  • What form does a makeup lesson take?
  • How and when do I need to report an absence?
Explore the guide6 sections

Read the absence policy before the course starts

Confirm how to report an absence, how much notice is requested and how long you have to arrange the replacement. Ask whether the policy differs for illness, a planned trip or a class canceled by the provider. Record the contact method so you are not searching for it on the day.

If you already know about a scheduling conflict, raise it before booking. The instructor can explain whether missing that lesson would make the rest of the course difficult. An orientation or first skills session may be especially important to the way the group is organized.

Compare a makeup group class with private lessons

Joining another group can provide practice and live feedback, but check that the content and level match. A private review may focus efficiently on your questions. Recorded material can explain the exercise but does not automatically give the trainer an opportunity to watch your handling.

Ask what support accompanies written notes or video. You may need clarification on where to stand, when to reward or how to simplify the task. Confirm whether you can send a question before returning and whether the next lesson includes time to check your understanding.

Plan a smooth return

Request the exercise names, key instructions and preparation for the next meeting. Avoid trying to recreate a complex activity from another participant’s brief description. Follow the instructor’s materials and note any point that is unclear.

Tell the instructor what you managed to practice and where you stopped. If the next lesson assumes a skill you have not learned, ask for an easier version or a separate catch-up arrangement. The aim is to rejoin at a workable level, not to demonstrate that you completed everything without help.

Check practical restrictions

Makeup places may depend on space in another course or availability before an expiry date. Ask whether you keep the same instructor, attend at a different venue or bring a different family handler. Check that the alternative setting meets your dog’s needs.

If you expect repeated absences, discuss whether flexible private appointments or an eligible drop-in class would fit better. A makeup policy can cover interruptions, but frequent gaps may make a sequential group course difficult to follow.

Match the makeup lesson to the dog training topic

Ask which skills were taught during the missed lesson and where they sit in the course. A basic obedience class may introduce a cue that is used again the following week. An agility session may include equipment instruction that should not be attempted from a short written summary. The replacement needs to address the actual learning gap.

For puppy classes, check whether the missed session involved owner discussion, handling practice or a particular socialization activity. Ask how to catch up appropriately for your puppy and which elements need direct instructor feedback. Joining any available class is not necessarily an equivalent experience.

If the course prepares for an AKC evaluation, a therapy dog assessment or another specific goal, ask whether attendance and prerequisite requirements affect the makeup option. Different programs have different rules, so confirm the requirements for the particular course and test.

Prepare for the next group class

Ask the trainer to identify a manageable practice task while you wait for the makeup class. Confirm the cue, setup and equipment, such as the leash or collar used in the original lesson. Use the instructions supplied by the trainer rather than introducing an unrelated exercise from another course.

When you return, explain what you practiced and what remains unclear. If the instructor has changed, make sure the new trainer knows which class you missed. A brief review can reveal whether you are ready for the next exercise or need a simpler version.

Keep the makeup booking and instructions together with the original course notes. This is particularly useful when the replacement happens after the following scheduled lesson. Ask how the trainer will help you bridge that gap so the timetable does not dictate an unsuitable progression.

Effective training is a partnership between dog and handler based on trust, love, and science. Dogs are more complex and advanced than we think and so is training them. Training a dog is about mutual trust and respect. Being receptive to different training methods is essential in bringing your dog to their full potential. Each dog is unique to their breed, just as much as they are to their own learning style; therefore relying on one training method is impractical. That’s why I don’t choose a specific technique for every dog. One method could be detrimental to another. My life’s passion and purpose is to bring you and your dog closer than ever through trust, communication, and an understanding of each other.

Frequently asked questions

More detail to help you choose and prepare.

Is a makeup class automatically included?

Do not assume so. Request the current course terms and ask which replacement options are available for your situation. A listing that mentions makeup classes does not describe every restriction or booking requirement.

What if my dog is unwell on class day?

Contact the provider and follow your veterinarian’s advice about attendance. Ask how to receive the missed instructions and arrange the next appropriate session. Do not attend simply to avoid losing your place.
