Walking with Walter Dog Training offers training for every dog and family along the Colorado Front Range. We specialize in advanced and basic obedience. In addition to obedience we provide behavior modification training with a focus on teaching owners how to properly communicate with their dogs. Like any relationship, communication is the key to success. Our training starts with a strong foundation built on the basics. We believe that a well-trained dog listens to its owners and will remain obedient regardless of the circumstances. Our balanced approach yields consistent results. I have a 7 yr old bulldog who started growling at me when I get near his food. We've never had aggression issues before this started. He has never bitten me, but I am worried he will. What can I do?
If not addressed it can get worse. For the time being I’d recommend making your dog wait patiently while the food is put out. Do not allow him to “rush” the bowl. He needs to understand that protecting his food is an unwanted and unnecessary behavior. However, if you are not comfortable with that, contact me ASAP so we can get to work on changing his behavior.

Why does my 2 year old Black Lab bark every time the doorbell rings?
It boils down to your relationship with your dog and what you allow and don’t allow. If the dog barks and you tell it to stop barking and it does not stop then you’ve got some relationship building to do with the dog. Dogs must understand what good behavior is.

How old does my dog need to be before I start training?
You can start training basic obedience as early as 8 weeks old. In addition to obedience, this is the best time to start introducing your dog to as many sights, sounds and smells as possible. Call me or schedule an evaluation and I am happy to provide some guidance.

My 4 yr old German Shepherd pulls me down the street when we walk. I love my dog, but can’t stand taking him for a walk anymore. Can you help with a dog who has a mind of his own when on leash?
I am sorry to hear that walks have become such a chore. Yes, I can help. I teach owners how to train their dogs to walk nicely on a loose leash. If you are interested in a training session, the best place to start is with an evaluation.

My puppy is eating/chewing everything in the house. How do I stop her?
Chewing is very common with puppies. It is important to have chew toys handy as an alternative to a household item. Show her what is an acceptable item to chew on. The ol’ “this instead of that” technique. : )

We sent our one-year-old Great Dane, Gregory, to Lawren for a month-long board and train after realizing he’d discovered just how big he really is, and how easily he could push our boundaries. With a baby on the way, it was so important to us that he learned better leash manners and body awareness. The transformation has been incredible. Gregory now walks calmly right by our side without pulling, listens beautifully (even off leash!), and is so much more aware of his body and how to move gently around us. He’s still his happy, goofy Great Dane self, just so much more grounded. We can’t thank Lawren enough for the time, patience, and skill he put into working with Gregory. It’s truly remarkable to see how excited our boy is to listen and complete a task. We couldn’t recommend him more highly!
We were spending some time in Denver and our dog was struggling to adjust to her new surroundings. Just a few sessions were enough for us to learn how to better communicate with her. She was walking better and much less reactive after just an hour, the next few only smoothed things out further. I couldn’t recommend walking with Walter more!
