One of Canine Companion Consulting’s specialties is Separation Anxiety. Separation Anxiety is a very common behavioral concern in dogs. Studies vary, but indicate that up to 20% of all dogs have separation anxiety on some level and account for up to 40% of dogs referred to trainers or behaviorists. Separation anxiety can manifest itself in many ways. Symptoms of separation anxiety can be but is not limited to inappropriate elimination, destroying things within the household, barking, whining, panting and not being able to settle when the pet parent is not present. Some dogs are attached to a particular person and some dogs just need someone or another animal present. Not only can it be extremely stressful for the dog, but also for the pet parents.

Program details
Veterinary care and grooming can be stressful for the dog, pet parent, and pet professionals. Reducing stress and anxiety results in a more productive practice and increased likelihood pet parents will participate in needed preventative and routine care. The Hospital or Salon will become a safer, more productive, and more comfortable environment for all. We have designed a Cooperative Care Program called Happy Handling that can be offered to canines of all ages, either as a group class or privately, depending on the client. We collaborate with the pet parent and pet professional to find out what will work best for each canine companion. We will consult with doctors and groomers to find out what they recommend and are striving for. We work as a team to target the Happy Handling every dog deserves.

Do you work with aggressive, fearful or anxious dogs?
Yes, we work with dogs of all ages and breeds with separation anxiety, general anxiety, aggression, and fear. We have worked with dogs that are uncomfortable around other dogs, humans and objects in their environment.

How do I get started working with you?
You can schedule an appointment on our web site or call us. When we meet with you for the very first time we will ask you about the behaviors you are concerned about. We will document our findings in a Behavior Report that we will email to you. We will give you lots of information and recommendations based on your life style and your canine companion(s). From there we will tailor a training plan to meet your needs. We are available between appointments to answer your questions.

If I could give more than five stars I would. We brought our 11year old dog to Canine Companion after trying many other trainers. He has multiple challenges stemming from his anxiety. After 8 sessions he’s like a new dog and we feel confident and informed about how to help his behavior in the future.

What an awesome and valuable experience. Grace, our 15 mo old lab, LOVED all the staff at the vets office…until it was time for them to actually do anything. We needed to proactively intervene and needed guidance. We enrolled in the Happy Handling private program with Canine Companion Consulting. I was so used to giving Grace a command and rewarding a positive response. Beth and Wayne patiently shifted my mindset instead, to ASK, watch and reward voluntary cooperation from Grace. Not only was it a delightful experience, it was wholly successful. I learned the tools I need to help Grace succeed at the vet’s office and reduce the stress on everyone involved.

My husband and I did a foster to adopt of a sweet staffy mix who at the time was undergoing heartworm treatments and had exercise restrictions. Once healthy and really comfortable with us, we noticed behavioral changes. Our dog had become highly reactive, particularly with other dogs or men. Beth and Wayne helped us to understand the fear and triggers causing the behaviors. Each session provides you with a running list of what’s being worked on. Our vet office received a copy as well which helped when we added in a medication. The training is a lot of guidance on what we could do to increase success and lessen the fear/reactivity. Our dog has made so much progress with their help. They were also flexible to her needs. For example, if we planned to train at a park, we’d adjust if it was too busy on that given day. Beth and Wayne are both very knowledgeable and highly recommended.
Great people and training. Our dog, Mr Bones, got a lot from these classes. I would highly recommend Beth and Wayne. I can't wait to go back. 5 of 5 or 10 of 10 stars.
