Force-free training dog training in Maine

"Training with Compassion" We use clicker training using 100 percent force free methods. We teach classes, private lessons and day school. Group classes run through puppy, beginner, intermediate, CGC/therapy and limited service dog training. We also consult with clients on behaviors such as jumping up, pulling leash, reactivity, resource guarding, fear-based behaviors, potty training, recall, and many other behaviors. We pride ourselves on being members of The Pet Professional Guild, The Association of Force Free Trainers. Instructors are required to be certified through The Certification Council for Professional Trainers (CPDT-KA). The use of shock, e-collar, prong, choke collars is NEVER USED by our trainers or at our facilities.

Founded by Certified Dog Behavior Consultant, Whitney Thurston, our focus is on quality training that helps you truly connect with your dog. We offer general obedience training and group classes as well as day training and customized private training plans. Additionally, Whitney Thurston, CDBC, is one of the only certified dog behaviorists in Maine and is able to help with behavior modification for aggressive and fearful behavior dogs.

As President of Canine Behavior Counseling, I help dog owners stop aggression toward people, prevent bites, and build predictable, safe behavior using proven, humane training methods. My work is grounded in clarity, compassion, and practical guidance that supports safer homes and stronger communities. Having owned and rehabilitated thousands of territorial dogs with bite histories, I am uniquely qualified to conduct Bite Risk Assessments that identify the true root causes of behavior. As a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (IAABC) and Certified CARAT Assessor, I help owners understand their dog’s temperament, sensitivities, and social needs to guide effective, ethical training decisions.
