Our four year old Doberman, Franklin, has reactivity issues with both humans and dogs. To that end, we sought out USA Dog Behavior as a suggestion from our veterinarian. When I spoke with Scott and his wife, Barbara, before bringing Franklin to training, they explained the process, Scott's approach to working with a dog like Franklin, and the outcomes I could expect. Scott worked with Franklin and me to find actionable solutions for Franklin to be a successful and well-adjusted dog. He is not a "one size fits all" trainer, which is what I needed. From the first time Scott met Franklin, he zeroed in on the specific tools and training that would specifically work for my dog. Scott explained why he was suggesting certain training exercises, and why Franklin was reacting in certain ways. To help Franklin overcome his issues, I needed to know why he was acting in a particular manner. So, this portion of training was particularly helpful. It also reinforced my thoughts about Franklin's behavior. My questions (which were numerous) were never rebuffed. The at-home videos were informative without being tedious. The handouts reinforced what Franklin and I learned in our training sessions, and provided me with reference in case I forgot something from our training. I also was happy to see Scott does not use e-collars, prong collars, punitive treatment, or any of those items that do not address the real issues. Instead, we found what worked for Franklin (he is food motivated) and used that to shape behavior. Scott also suggested the right leash for Franklin, worked on our walking skills (mostly my walking and command of the lead, which was necessary), and response to situations where Franklin is most likely to react negatively. Instead of telling me what to do, Scott also explained WHY he was suggesting specific responses and solutions. From the first day I brought Franklin to Scott to today, there has been marked improvement in Franklin's behavior. We are able to take walks without scaring everyone. We are able to be in the vicinity of a dog park without a riot. I am not the "scary Doberman lady" anymore. Franklin is able to walk down the street without reacting to everything he sees. This is something that was not a possibility prior to working with Scott. Franklin has not been "fixed" in our sessions; rather, this is a process that will take time and effort. If you are expecting your dog to be miraculously changed from one session or a weeklong behavior camp, then this is not for you. (Sidebar: Those sessions do not exist and the camps do not change the behavior, only manage it). Franklin and I still have lots of work to accomplish, but we know how to make that happen. Ultimately, Franklin is a happier, less-stressed, less scared dog. This is the ultimate goal, as I love my dog and want him to be the best dog he can be. If you want to experience one-on-one sessions with a knowledgeable trainer that provide specific exercises you can do with your dog to improve behavior over time, then this is the spot. If you want real solutions, not management of behavior that will continue, then Scott is your trainer. If you want a trainer that will support you and your dog through the work, will answer emails/texts/calls, and is available for help after you have paid for your sessions, then Scott is your trainer. (Note: We worked with Scott during the pandemic. He is absolutely committed to social distancing, proper mask wearing, and cleanliness during training. At no time was I worried about my personal safety regarding COVID-19).
