To those reading: We choose to work with clients because we feel it's important for them to learn proper handling skills. One reason some trainers may want to Board N Train is because it's hard for Owners to remain OBJECTIVE throughout the process. Board N Train removes the owner initially so the trainer can work uninhibited with the dog. We CHOOSE to work with people. Client Evaluation: Breed Pitbull that is nervous with a previous abuse and bite history. Goals: Socialization, Desensitization, Basic Obedience, Respect for both Owners/Handlers Day in question: First day of training I said Hi to you but other then that you were checked in by another trainer. I was checking in another individual and from that you state you got, "an off feeling about me"! Next day when we interacted you showed up to class 45 min late and you disrupted class for everyone including your dogs handler. You proceeded to take the leash and tell him to work the clicker. I told you we work our own clickers as to decrease confusion for the dog, I took the leash to show you how to place everything to make it easier. I also wanted to work with your dog because she was the only one that day I did not work with. You can look up LEASH PRESSURE online because guided pressure helps communicate to the dog what we want from them. Pressure up on the leash layered with SIT communicates that their butt should go down as I gently pressed down on her butt. She was coming up onto the box and releasing off of the box which is exactly the response we want. You demanding the leash back caught me off guard as no one has EVER done that before. I tried to explain to you that even sending kids to school for the first time they will be nervous but they do it and a few weeks in that nervousness decreases. This is how dog desensitization works. You then sat in the car during the next class and took yourself out of being involved in your dogs learning process. In that class your dog was interacting appropriately with others, went on a walk perfectly with all the other dogs in class and did a great job. The next class you no-call-no-showed. Unfortunately you were not open minded to the process. You prejudged me before even getting to know me, you held your dog back from interacting with others in class, you dictated how to run our program, and then refused to have a conversation with me the Company/Property Owner. It was explained to you on the phone-call with the Co-Owner that your behavior is causing minimal progress and with only one handler in the household involved, important class details/experiences are missed. Also, the nucleus of issues most of the time stems from us, the Owners. The day you showed 45 mins late your dog leapt into you arms in a nervous fashion and you reinforced that behavior. It's not to blame or judge but these are the things we do that actually make the situation worse not better. Pit Bulls as a bully breed, are first to be prejudged and euthanized if they show any forms of aggression/reactivity/bite history with possible forced removal from homes. We are here to help break the stereotype but it comes with hard work and maybe uncomfortable work at times. We have successfully worked with timid and abused dogs before (even our own abused rescues). The process is not about how things happened to us but it's about the cure. We have limited time to work with these dogs as 12 sessions goes fast. People that open up, come to work, accept constructive criticism excel, while those that are closed off do not. At anytime you are more than welcome to discuss this issue, take the program seriously, and return to class. It's your choice!
