Do I need puppy training?

It is imperative for puppies to receive proper foundation training. This is particularly important during the critical period which occurs from birth to 16 weeks. During this time puppies should be exposed to as much of the world as possible. Although we understand that they are still very immature and not capable of advanced behaviors it is during this time that puppies can be taught how to learn. Once they understand this process, using a marker based system, they can easily learn throughout their life!

What does our board and train entail?

Training starts immediately upon arrival for a board and train. Dogs will be taught a marker based system of learning. They will be taken out in the community several days a week and during this time they will be required to be neutral to their environment. Throughout training, we will continue to add in distance, duration and distraction to proof all commands and ensure a calm state of mind. We do not believe in one standard training method for all dogs. We will work with owners to build a program to meet the specific needs of their dog and family. We make ourselves available throughout training to answer any questions and alleviate any concerns. We pride ourselves on our transparency and dedication to keeping owners up to date and informed on the progress of training.

I can’t say enough good things about Ridgeside K-9 and our trainer, Shonnah. We did the 3 week board and train for our puppy and it was the best investment. I was sad having to leave her for 3 weeks but Shonnah sent us multiple updates and videos every day, I loved seeing her transition into an amazing puppy! Pearl came back so well behaved, especially for a puppy, but still shows us her personality every day. One of the biggest “this was so worth it” moment for us was our first outing around people, she’s been home a few weeks now (she’s only 5 months old now) and we took her to a coffee shop, as soon as another dog came walking by she immediately sat down at my feet and just waited. She was so calm! People would come and go, along with other dogs and she obviously wanted to go see the dog or person but she stayed sitting at my feet. This is huge for us, and exactly what we wanted, a non-reactive puppy but where she still has her own silly personality. Shonnah was such a great trainer for Pearl, I know she can be a bit rebellious at times and she needed the structure and consistency Shonnah provided. We also really enjoyed our first group class, it’s amazing to see so many well behaved dogs all thanks to RidgesideK9! When a question was asked there was so much thought and explanation put into to the answer, I’m so greatful for all of their knowledge! It has truly helped us keep up with her training after she’s been home.

We had an overall great experience with Ridgeside K9 Summerville. Our 10-month-old Golden Retriever, Whiskey, needed help with leash pulling, overall confidence, and some resource guarding. Our trainer Jeff was outstanding—very knowledgeable, patient, and great with Whiskey from the start. You can tell he loves dogs and I was completely comfortable leaving Whiskey in his care. Jeff explained everything clearly and made sure we understood why certain techniques work, not just what to do. We saw noticeable improvement quickly, especially with leash manners and confidence. He also left us with practical at-home tips to continue his resource guarding at home so we can continue the training on our own, which we really appreciated. His leash manners were like night and day upon return and his resource guarding is a little extra work for whiskey and myself but appears to be getting better. This at home does nothing but help build a better relationship with my dog that I don’t mind at all, and is a bonus. If you’re looking for professional, effective dog training and someone who truly cares about your dog’s success, I highly recommend Ridgeside K9 Summerville and Jeff.

THEY ARE AMAZING! Cori was awesome since the very first day. We were skeptical about sending our fur baby at first due to the separation, but Cori reassured us that he was in good hands. Prior to training, it was really hard to walk him and he would jump on everyone, including the other pets. However, after training, it's so much easier walking our 80lb pitty and he doesn't jump as much. We intend to continue classes to ensure that our puppy keeps up the good behavior! I highly reccomend Zack and Tara for protection/bitesports! Tara always explains how and why we do things the way we do, and Zack puts a lot of time and thought into building dogs correctly. They both put a lot of effort into training in a way that aligns with the goals of the handler and their dog, and I always feel that me and my dogs are making progress every time we train with them!
