Club K9 was our last resort for our highly reactive Belgian Malinois with a bite history. He needed extreme behavioral changes because of his traumatic history before we rescued him. We had put him thru private training prior which gave us basic obedience for a high drive working dog, but it did not address his reactivity and unfortunately had 2 more bite events. We knew that if one more try at training didn't work, we would have to euthanize him. We enrolled him in the 10-week boarding program for behavioral modification and we can truly say that the trainers at Club K9 saved our dogs life. After 6-weeks of boarding and 4-weeks of home + facility training, Brody has his same playful spirit but with far more impulse control and obedience. We can finally trust him again with other people and dogs. We have even been able to add a puppy to our family without worry of an incident because of his excellent training and social awareness. Club K9 gave Brody the confidence he lacked and taught us the skills we needed to give this reactive and abused dog a normal, balanced, and happy life. Do not take your dogs here for boarding. The training is good, the boarding here is terrible due to poor communication with staff, very little service recovery, and unwillingness to find a collaborative nature in troubleshooting issues. When we had the initial speech (yes that’s exactly what it was) we were told that trainers would be working with dogs to find out what drives them for positive and negative reinforcement, not to check in on pets constantly so staff could focus on the animals, download Gingr app for updates and fill out a short survey on the dogs for what behaviors to have the animals work on, and you can not pop in to see your dog unless visually through a partition. While, I do feel like the training aspect was decent, I do not feel like the boarding facilities (including dog run) or playtime was what I was paying for. The dogs got zero outside the building time. Their run is indoors with slates they are supposed to potty on that is then washed off. No grass or rocks. I didn’t see much in the way of play time when we would drop by, Just training, laying on a bed until called. Then pet and walked, and then put back on the bed or in their enclosure. Zero toys or home items are allowed. Very cold, very aloof, very military school. You can pick your dog up for health appointments, which I did with my male. I called 24 hours in advance, arranged a time to pick him up between 0630-0700. When I picked him up that morning, he was covered in urine bib, legs, tummy and tail. When I walked him outside the facility on the leash, he potty immediately like he had not been out at all. The vet staff were horrified because I did not have time to fully bath an 100 lb dog before our appointment. Against my better judgement, I took him back after having a lengthy conversation with Erica (the manager) who stated they do not usually update pet parents on issues and that has been her previous practice at other facilities. I’m really surprised by this because A) they have this app that they’re supposed to be using called Gingr that they told everyone to download. B) if there’s a problem, as an owner, I can probably pin point if something is wrong to help. In this case, my 4 yo male only goes potty outside. He never has accidents in the house or other facilities unless he’s sick or has to hold it more than 15 hours (ie a long time). She blamed reactive nature to training, but honestly, I think he just wanted to be walked outside like normal. It’s not a hard ask. It’s like telling humans to pee in a bed pan when we’re not sick, it’s not normal. After talking to another trainer, they agreed to take Toby outside for walks, but I’m not so sure he actually got that because when we went to pick him up, they took him to the indoor run to pee and he developed a hot spot on him from being wet from his “water bowl” according to a voicemail I got left from Erica. She was sure to kind of throw in the jab “in the interest of transparency as you wished”. No that’s what I’m paying for! I just felt like the air in the facility was of superiority when I brought up issues with the manager, there was not collaborative communication just excuses. It wasn’t until I found the trainer who actually talked through these problems with us that I felt alittle better. But even then, I’m not convinced after pick up at the end that anything changed. Honestly, the whole speech about tailoring training I felt like was a load of BS because everyone got the same thing. The “play time” was more like, you’re not in your cage time. And at the end, I asked to split the payments between my bank accounts, and I was charged the full price on one account $2227 and $1000 on the other… so basically I ended up getting charged $1000 over… and no one has called me back. Per usual. So, I will not be recommending this facility for boarding whatsoever. There are better out there. Pictures below are of the lack of communication from the Gingr app they use.
