We offer affordable dog training. 1 on 1 private lessons. We do the same training as bigger places, only we are much smaller with less bills so we can offer the same training for far less. ☺ I personally love being able to help owners understand how to communicate with their dogs. What people have asked about this business.

Do you use negative reinforcement in your training practices? Also do you provide introduction to agility training?

Hi Cheryl! Great question. We’re what’s considered balanced trainers, which means we pull from a variety of training styles to find what works best for each individual dog — without ever using fear, intimidation, or dominating methods. Our goal is for training to be as positive and fun as possible, using things like treats, praise, and play to build trust, confidence, and reliability. That said, we also understand that not all dogs learn the same way. Some dogs may benefit from additional tools, such as training collars — but we are extremely selective about what brands and types we use, and we never put them on every dog. We don’t sell these tools, so if we ever recommend one, it’s because it can help the dog, not because of any profit motive. You’re involved in every step of your dog’s training. We’ll always talk through options with you beforehand, and you’ll see exactly how we work with your dog firsthand. Our approach is rooted in partnership, transparency, and customizing the training to what’s best for your dog — not what fits into a cookie-cutter method. As for agility — while we don’t have a full agility course on site, we can introduce your dog to confidence-building activities and agility-style foundations that are great for focus, energy, and enrichment. Let us know if you’d like to learn more — we’d love to help you and your dog get started!

Question on Google
Do you do in home training for adult dogs with aggression towards the doorbell and front door?

Hi Bill! Great question — we actually don’t offer in-home training, and here’s why: We’ve found that dogs make faster and more lasting progress when they’re removed from the environment where the problem behavior started. In-home issues like aggression at the door or toward the doorbell are often tied to territorial habits, overstimulation, or lack of impulse control — and those patterns are hard to change when the dog is still surrounded by the same triggers and routines. By training at our controlled facility, we can reset those habits, build impulse control, and teach your dog to listen and regulate themselves in a neutral, distraction-free space. Once that foundation is strong, we layer in real-life distractions (including door-related setups) to help the behavior transfer back to home — but without trying to correct the issue in the heat of the moment. It’s a safer, more effective, and more reliable way to create long-term change! Let us know if you’d like more details — we’d love to help.

Before coming to Kurtz K-9’s I had tried another local training group for my fearful & human reactive dog, Sokka, with zero to limited results. I was feeling defeated and like a failure, and both me and my dog were anxious disasters out in the world. Coming to train with Ashlee at Kurtz was like a breath of fresh air. She was extremely knowledgeable, observant, and had a great positive attitude from the beginning. I cannot express how grateful I am for Ashlee’s guidance with my boy, he has come such a long way. And we’ve now been able to go to the park multiple times while still being calm and engaged with me! Would not have been able to make it to this point without her.

They are amazing I never had a Rottweiler while they smart they are stubborn, they have taught him so much. I did group training in the past and my dog learn nothing. The one on one real helps get my specific needs meet for me and my dog. Thank you so much. I would highly recommend them. This picture is of him maintaining place while I have my kids knocking on the door.

We had the best experience taking our puppy to Kurtz K-9’s! I spoke to many dog training companies in STL. Most wanted us to drop off our puppy. We found a few that let us be part of the training, and by far, Kurtz K-9’s impressed us the most. They were so kind, upfront with costs (which were very reasonable), and supportive of our goals. We started taking our puppy after her final rounds of vaccines were effective. While some other companies tried to urge us to start training before her vaccines took effect, the owner was so reassuring about it being safest to wait. She assured us that this wouldn’t put our puppy behind, and that her safety was far more important. We started training with both Abby and Ashlee. We learned SO much from both! We will definitely be back for more advanced training. Both trainers were so patient, provided detailed homework plans, and gave amazing suggestions for everything from collars to obedience. We came to the first few classes with a laundry list of questions, which they patiently and happily answered. By the final class, we couldn’t think of any questions because they had given us SO much helpful information! Our groomer even noticed a difference after 2 classes, asking where we were taking our (VERY energetic) pup for training. She said it’s very obvious which dogs are in training, and they knew right away she had started classes! Abby and Ashley have helped us tremendously! We couldn’t have picked a better company! They truly care about their pups and families!

We just started taking our 9 mos old rescue puppy here. Great, helpful, friendly, advice and training. Reasonable price, too.
