When I got the call from an employee that he had lost a dog my heart sank. As a dog owner and lover, I was devastated and heartbroken. I can’t begin to imagine how I would feel if one of my own dogs was lost. This was an extremely serious incident for us and we got to work immediately looking for Rocky. I consulted a well respected pet recovery expert, executed the best practices under her guidance, and called in all available staff for our search for Rocky. Everyone involved worked tirelessly and did not stop until I personally laid eyes on him. There are a lot of lessons to take away here. It's important to acknowledge our role in the situation and the shortcomings in my response. First, while we had a process in place to prevent this from happening, one employee, who has been terminated, did not follow the process and as a result, Rocky was able to slip his collar. Moving forward we are reviewing safety training and proper equipment usage to prevent anything like this from happening. Second, I am not proud of my behavior the following week. I will not make excuses for my failure to follow up. Please know, my lack of communication was not due to a lack of empathy or understanding of Arli’s feelings. To the contrary, I failed to call because I was unable to overcome my own anxiety and heartbreak. This is not an excuse. I simply want to make clear that I never stopped caring and thinking of this family and what they are going through. I was wrong for not reaching out, and I take full responsibility. This experience has been a very humbling lesson for me personally and I am determined to grow and learn from it.
