Questions & answers

From Google

What people have asked about this business.

Do we have to use food as reinforcement for dogs?

Food is typically one of the most efficient reinforcers. For dogs, food is considered an unconditioned reinforcer. Simple, you do not have to teach the dog to want it or like it. Because you are paying good money for our time, we use food to make sure the process moves as efficiently as possible. Once we start working, we will guide you through the process of identifying other forms of reinforcements that we can utilize as well. Anything that dog is trying to acquire – a Beagle getting to a scent, a Lab wanting the ball, or a Doodle desperately trying to get attention – is your currency. These things can and will also be used as rewards in exchange for a desired behavior. It is rare but there are some dogs who like food but won’t work for it. Most of the time there is a reason, like stress. We can help sort that out.

Question on Google
What is the best way to reach you?

Text us for immediate needs including emergencies, last minute cancellations, or behavior emergencies like bites. We may not be able to answer immediately if we are in a session but will text you back as soon as I can. Scheduling appointments and sending training updates should be done via email as they are collected and organized per client. Emails are checked twice a day and are answered as quickly as possible, typically within 48-72 hours. Messages that are sent via Facebook sometimes get missed depending on our activity. You will get an automated response with instructions directing you back to our site. Call? Sure we do technically know how to use the phone. The best number to ensure you are able to leave a message and we will actually get it is 401-889-DOGS.

Question on Google
What is "positive reinforcement"?

The simplest way to explain it is an approach to behavior change that focuses on the reinforcement of appropriate behavior, teaching the dog what exactly it is you want them to do, and how to do it in situations that have proven to be a challenge. Once people get into the habit of rewarding behavior that is “good,” or wanted, the nuisance and problem behaviors get shaken off like extra water after their bath.

Question on Google
What is dog behavior consulting?

Dog behavior consulting is a unique service that educates dog owners on their pets’ behaviors and their relationship with emotions, while fostering empathy and connection. Many owners are unaware of how their reactions impact their dogs or how to interpret their pets’ signals. By teaching you as the owner, how to “listen” to your dog and understand their perspective, interactions become more meaningful and effective. Our approach aids in creating a more cooperative and compassionate world for dogs.

Question on Google
How long does it take to see results with dogs?

It depends. Behavior is complex and each dog is a unique individual. We usually have a better sense of timelines once the Complete Consult is done. Often times we will plan for 12 weeks of sessions as a baseline. But even then, we try to focus more on positive outcomes and continual progress over time.

Question on Google
How does your work differ from traditional dog training?

Our work is different from traditional dog training because we focus on the human-animal bond and understanding canine emotions. We emphasize empathy and teach owners how to understand their dogs’ signals, fostering a deeper connection. Instead of obedience, our approach integrates science-based methods to promote clear communication and the most current learning techniques available. We also put a premium on enrichment and quality of life. This holistic perspective enhances both the dog’s well-being and the owner’s ability to communicate effectively with their pet.

Question on Google
How long is one session?

At the first session, our team will conduct a Complete Consult, which is a 90-minute consultation to collect a behavior history and an in-depth discussion of the issues, functional assessment, prognosis, and how best to move forward. After the initial consult is complete, we can begin with typical 60-minute work sessions at a pace that works for the family.

I am so grateful that Cooperation Canine was part of our dog Simba's care team. When Simba reached adolescence, he developed canine compulsive disorder and reactivity to seemingly everything in his environment. Simba's world became very small as a result- we were overwhelmed and didn't know what to do. Cooperation Canine was recommended to us by other dog trainers that we trust, so we reached out to Erika and Sam. Via home and in clinic sessions, Erika worked with us patiently and diligently to help Simba better interact with the world around him. Erika's recommendations provided us avenues for working with Simba that we wouldn't have found or figured out on our own. After each consultation, a follow-up summary and step by step training instructions sent by Sam broke everything down, so we could stay on track with our training and other activities. Fast forward to today and Simba is doing so much better! Many thanks to Cooperation Canine for helping Simba and his fur parents live a happier and calmer life! I highly recommend this business for dog behavior consultations.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Erika and the incredible work she’s done with my dog. He’s a large high drive working breed with some behavioral challenges. Before working with Erika, walks were incredibly stressful for both of us. Reactivity, overstimulation, and tension were our norm. But Erika has completely transformed our experience. Her knowledge, compassion, and personalized approach have made a profound difference. We recently took a huge step by doing a reactivity session at one of the busiest local parks on a holiday, no less—and for nearly the entire walk, my dog remained calm, focused, and under threshold. That level of success would have been unthinkable just a few months ago. While our journey isn’t over, we’ve made so much progress, and we truly wouldn’t be here without Erika and her team. I can confidently say that her work has kept my dog in a safe home, and has kept him alive. Her work is changing both of our lives for the better. I am endlessly grateful. Thank you.

We came to Erica struggling to manage our reactive rescue dog after realizing that group classes just weren’t enough. Erica helped us understand what our dog was trying to communicate and taught us how to clearly communicate what we needed from her in return. She gave us a structured plan, and while the hard work was on us, we always felt supported and guided. Our dog has come a long way and is now generally able to navigate the world with much more confidence. I only wish we contacted Erica sooner!

Outstanding Dog Trainer! We started working with Erika when our English Springer Spaniel puppy was just 10 weeks old, and we couldn’t be more grateful for her guidance. Using positive reinforcement, she helped us establish a strong foundation right away, and he responded immediately. Erika made training easy to incorporate into our daily routine, ensuring that our new puppy fit in seamlessly with our lifestyle. Her expertise went beyond basic commands—she taught us how to understand our puppy’s needs for rest, play, socialization, and new experiences. By building his confidence, she also built ours, making walks and outings enjoyable from an early stage. Even when we faced challenges, we felt prepared because Erika had already given us the tools to handle challenging situations. Now at just 11 months old, our puppy impresses everyone he meets with his well mannered demeanor, and they are amazed he is still just a young pup! We highly recommend Erika and Cooperation Canine to anyone looking to raise a confident, well-adjusted dog.
