Brandon saved the day!! If you're in despair, call him. I was in despair about my new rescue-adopted deaf pit who seemed out of control. I'd never owned a pit—never mind a deaf one—and I was starting to think the racial profiling of this breed (aggressive, obstinate, etc) was true...and I was going to lose the battle with this dog. It was SO depressing. Then the rescue referred me to Brandon and in 1 session he fixed it. Rather, I should say, he fixed ME so that I could fix it with Carmela. Brandon isn't a trainer per se. He's a dog behavioralist and he gets them on a fundamental level. What I learned that day was that I actually had a **great** dog. That I was the one who didn't understand what my dog needed from me. Once I got my gentle alpha act together, Carmela could relax. And she became incredibly loving, in control and obedient. Two happy endings to this story: We have had many deaf pits in our lives since Carmela (kind of our speciality now!) and it has been such a beautiful experience. All credit for that goes to Brandon...honestly. And Carmela (our first) became a true breed ambassador! Example: we had a family visiting us. The parents were very 'worried about the pit bull.' Until Carmela happily allowed their 5-year old to drag her around the back yard on a leash for an hour. The kid and the parents were astonished. But I wasn't. My husband and I recently Zoomed with Brandon about our 3-yr-old mini-poodle, Beau. We needed a check-up. All had been going well since our first Zoom with Brandon two years ago: pretty good obedience and no more biting. But a month ago, Beau bit both of us again. It seemed to come out of nowhere. Brandon showed my husband and me ways to improve our leadership. We had stopped being consistent. Once we made it clear to Beau that we were in charge, everything changed. All the things he knew we didn’t like, he stopped doing. If we say NO once, now he knows we MEAN it. Life is happier and more peaceful for all of us. The other day guests came over, and instead of jumping up and down, Beau waited in his bed to be called over. He finally drops things when we say “Drop it.” He stops barking when we say “Quiet.” The change in Beau has been immediate and astonishing. Here were some of the questions we had before we Zoomed with Brandon: 1. We think Beau suffered puppy trauma, because he was biting from the age of 8 weeks (not typical puppy biting). How can being stronger leaders overcome something that ingrained? —By being more alpha, we make Beau feel more safe. 2. If we act more alpha with a (painless) correction or a noise, doesn’t that risk escalating the violence? —No. You have to think like a dog, not a human. When we correct Beau, he understands his natural order in the household, and it makes him feel secure. Dogs are meant to depend on us and be led by us, not the other way around. 3. Brandon’s methods never involve hurting a dog. They’re mental, not physical. Still, we are correcting Beau. Would he start acting afraid of us? Hide in a corner? —No. If anything, Beau is more loving than ever. Again, he is more assured of his place in our family, and it calms him. He respects us more. We’re not his brother or his sister, we’re his “parents!” He loves us for it. He is as sweet, confident and affectionate as ever. 4. Can a dog really switch this fast? Doesn’t he remember us from before, when to him we appeared more like "siblings" than "parents?" —Dogs live in the moment. When new pack leaders take over, dogs adjust. Beau loves his “new” parents. Earlier, when Beau bit me, I remember him acting depressed afterward. He sensed that something wasn’t right. Now the family has a clear structure and all of us are a lot happier. 5. You might think, I’m not the kind of person who can correct my dog, even painlessly. I can’t say a harsh word to my dog! —Well, then just “act” like you can. Pretend! You know that your dog will be happier when you give him the structure he needs. Just like a child whose caring parents risk discomfort to provide clear guidelines. After just a Zoom meeting and a few weeks of follow-up calls, which Brandon always answered promptly and patiently, Beau is a happier creature and so are we. With the practical advice and insights Brandon has given us, we feel confident Beau will never bite again. We have given our pup the sense of order and security he needs. More people should learn Brandon’s methods. They are life-changing. The all-treats approach might work with many dogs, but it didn’t work with Beau. We’d tried two different trainers who helped a bit, but not with the biting. We needed someone like Brandon who is not a trainer but a behaviorist, and whose methods use basic common sense. Brandon was wonderfully helpful to me and we haven't even met yet! I reached him by phone, he asked about the kinds of aggressiveness my newly rescued from the streets pup was having, heard me out and very generously gave me insights into my guy's behavior and suggestions for moving him beyond and/or avoiding altogether the attack stage. So far this review is the only "compensation" Brandon has received from me, though I look forward to meeting him and treating my dog to some pack time with Brandon and his crew. I've been working with Brandon for the past 6 years and he's changed our lives. I had tried positive reinforcement trainers, obedience trainers, balanced trainers, and even went to the dpc classes for 6 months - nothing was helping my dog. In fact he was getting worse. It wasn't until we met Brandon that everything made sense and we were finally able to understand our dog - from their perspective. He's changed my entire understanding of dogs, and I've sent countless friends to him as well who are forever grateful for his help too. I couldn't recommend Brandon enough!
