FirstBarkMy dog has anxiety issues and is fearful of other dogs. The trainers at Barks and Rec have been invaluable in helping him overcome his fears and lead a more normal doggie life. We are currently participating in the Level 2 class, and Kathy is a thoughtful, knowledgeable and extremely helpful trainer. Highly recommended.

Barks and Rec. Animal Training and Behavior is the only facility of its kind in northern Michigan. We use modern, science-based, and empathy-driven positive reinforcement training methods to help you and your dog live your best lives together. Our trainers are highly educated in learning theory, behavior modification, ethology, puppy development, behavior analysis, and more. Our services include group classes, private and in-home training for: puppy socialization, manners and obedience; aggression, reactivity, and separation anxiety; CGC testing and therapy dog prep; and dog sports, including agility, scent work, Rally O, and AKC Fit Dog. Visit our temperature-controlled facility located just South of Chum's Corner in Traverse City.

The trainers have so much knowledge and experience. The small class size (1 instructor to 6 dogs maximum) is so refreshing after having been in classes that were much larger. The variety of classes is great! I've attended Pup Scout, Bark Ranger, Agility, and Tricks classes, Sunday Funday and Work Shops. All have been a great experience for me and my dog.
My dog, Roger, and I have taken several classes at Barks and Rec. over the last 2 years and couldn't be happier! Roger LOVES every second of it! Alicea is always accommodating and really tries to customize the classes to fit your dog's needs and training style. She also offers a wide range of classes with more being added so there's always something new to learn and do with your dog!
Alicea and her team are very knowledgeable in all things dogs and fear free training. We’ve taken puppy classes, nose work and agility classes, had fun at Sunday Fundays, and had one on one training. My pup would not be as well behaved as she is without their care and instruction. It’s my dogs favorite place to be. I highly recommend Barks and Rec!
The class that I took was not what I had excepted it to be. The cost to instruction ratio did not match up (to much cost and to little instruction). My pup already knew most of what was taught (yes not perfect but still knew it). Having the instruction use the wrong name for my pup was not helpful and very confusing for my pup. I did not care for the clicker training but did not get an option to work with a different method. Instructor seemed to have certain dogs out of the class that she preferred to work with. I had searched YouTube before hand and had learned more there than in class. Very disappointed. The class was designed for very young dogs (no older then ten weeks) as what was taught should already be part of daily life at ten to twelve weeks of age.
