Where do I start other than to say that we are so grateful to Nancy for her help with our 15 yo old pit bull mix, Mini. Mini was experiencing confusion and cognitive decline but was otherwise healthy, eating and drinking with age appropriate mobility. However she rather suddenly became fearful of us, would cower in our presence, and try to bite us when we attempted to leash her or pet her. We didn’t know what triggered this or what to do and were growing increasingly concerned living with an unpredictable dog demonstrating dangerous behaviors. Nancy did the most thorough assessment with us that involved a complete history of Mini’s time with our family, her previous home, and explored behavioral and environmental influences over her life to date. She connected the dots between previous traumatic experiences that Mini encountered in her life with what may be triggering the current behaviors that we were seeking to understand. She offered ideas and solutions to managing Mini’s behaviors. However the biggest thing we walked away with was the realization that we needed to change our expectations of what our aged dog was capable of at this stage of her life. Just as humans experience cognitive and behavior changes as we age, that in turn affect quality of life and ability to continue to function at the same level that one did earlier in life, we now understood that this is true for dogs as well. Bottom line, we needed to adjust our expectations and interactions with our dog; if Mini is fearful of being leashed, don’t leash her. When Mini tries to bite us when we attempt to pet her, then we shouldn’t attempt to pet her. As strange as these actions seem, in following through with Nancy’s recommendations, the result after almost 2 months is we have a dog that will now be in the room with us, asks to go outside and sun herself on the deck, wags her tail when we come home and occasionally even seeks out a brief stroke on the head. We had to change our behavior and in doing so we can now successfully co-exist with our old dog in a way that allows her to relax and not be fearful of us. Sure, we miss the days of long walks around the neighborhood and cuddles on the couch but we understand that this is what our dog is capable of offering us at this stage in her life and that we need to adapt for her sanity. We are so impressed with Nancy’s assessment, expertise and guidance and recommend her highly!
