Why does my dog act like a lunatic when it sees other dogs?
Reactivity on leash could be a result of frustration when the dog wants to go see whatever it is that it sees but can’t, or fear which would result in the dog barking and lunging for the purpose of creating more space from the person, dog or thing that it sees. Both of these can be modified through the use of positive reinforcement for an alternative behavior or counter conditioning and desensitization methods.

What is the most challenging behavior you experience with your dog or puppy?
Some of the most common behavior challenges I experience with my clients include pulling on leash, reacting to people or other dogs while on leash, anxiety to unfamiliar people or places or when getting in & riding in the car, barking at things they hear or see, and separation anxiety. Most often, these behavior issues are a result of fear or frustration. Dogs need to feel safe in order to be able to learn. All of these are behavior issues that I can help dogs overcome using positive reinforcement, counter conditioning and desensitization, creating new positive associations, or teaching the dog and alternative behavior that is incompatible with the unwanted behavior.

Why doesn’t my puppy stop peeing in the house?
Learning to hold its bowels and bladder and communicate to the human when they need to go potty so you can take it outside to eliminate where you want it to is a behavior that needs to be taught to your puppy. Otherwise, your puppy will just go when the need arises wherever they’re at, which is natural for them to do.

What is learned helplessness in dogs?
A dog may seem to be emotionally “fine” with an experience when it is actually shut down emotionally because it has learned that it has no choice but to endure the experience. A common example is being groomed. Often the experience of being bathed and having loud, intense air driers blown at them is not an enjoyable experience, but the dog has learned it has no choice and is physically restrained from expressing how it feels about the experience - this is learned helplessness.

We adopted 2 collie puppies Shadow & Bailey from Adopt Me Bluegrass. We have never had training for our previous dogs but wanted to give our puppies the best start. Dogwood recommended Wendy which was the best decision we could have made. Her patience, knowledge, and love for what she does is exceptional. From coming to our home, working in her fabulous studio, a social play date with other dogs and ending with a session at Cabela’s were all excellent in helping to train our dogs in multiple situations. We always saw an instantaneous response from our puppies on what she was teaching and their eagerness to learn with her. We appreciate all her tips and will continue to enhance on everything we have learned from her. We highly recommend Wendy and The Life of Riley!

Wendy is absolutely fantastic. She has helped us train our American Bulldog puppy to be the kind of puppy we hoped she could be. If we continue to follow her instruction, Layla's going to be a terrific dog. Busy humans trying to train dogs and puppies without understanding how canine behavior works is difficult and frustrating. Wendy helped us eliminate the frustration and make the difficult much easier. It's still a lot of work and there is no silver bullet or magic potion, but if you're willing to follow her instruction and put in the time, your results will almost certainly be as good as ours. I highly recommend Wendy's force-free approach, especially for puppies. It has been a revelation for us.
A very convenient and very useful service. Training sessions are done on your premises and at times convenient to you. Wendy comes equipped with a lot of useful tools and demonstrates effective behavior modification "games" that can be used to improve your dog's behavior. Afterward, she follows up with documentation and links to useful products and services. A great value for the money!
