Over used the shock collar. When I showed up my dog had a hot spot on his neck. She mentioned she had to really give it to him to make him listen. He’s gun shy. They don’t use real guns there because the air canon “works just as good”. Don’t waste your money with them. I liked them just fine as people, but when it comes to bird dog training, I didn’t get what I paid for. Not even close. My dog runs away and cowers at the sight of a gun and the shock collar.

I have known Jack Morris for 16 years, he has trained my four retrievers. The first dog got me hooked on the retrieving game, suffering through my amateur attempts. The last three have been and are successful hunt test competitors – all three have qualified at the Master National at least once, my “Ray” was MNH4. Jack helped me find my last three puppies. He looks for breedings where the pups should have the drive, talent, temperament and personality that work best with me – so far, so good. I send the pups to him at about 6 months of age. The basics are thoroughly instilled in the pups, each one working at their own pace. There is no rushing through any phase of training. Jack encourages owners to come and work with their dogs to learn/improve their handling skills. In other words, he tries to train the handler as well as the dog – sometimes a formidable task. Jack explains the “why” of a dog’s reactions so that you understand how body movement, verbal intonation, terrain, bird placement, etc. affect a dog’s performance. Jack makes this retrieving game successful and fun. He is very competitive and strives to train the best hunting and hunt test dogs possible. And, he keeps things in perspective. He reminds you that sometimes “dogs are just dogs” and that the handler can make just as many mistakes as the dog. He builds camaraderie among his clients and you watch handlers gain confidence in their skills and awkward puppies become magnificent retrievers. I guess that’s why I’m willing to send dogs from North Carolina to Texas where they can become “Stellar” companions. When choosing a retriever trainer, I look for someone that loves the dogs, has clean up-to-date facilities, access to appropriate training grounds, coaching skills for dogs and handlers, and a solid work ethic. I also look for someone that is committed to excellence. Jack Morris and the staff at Stellar Retrievers have all of these attributes.
