We decided long before we actually had a hunting dog that we would be getting a Labrador retriever from Mike at SoDak Labradors & Gundog Kennels when the time came. In a nutshell, that decision was based on my experience hunting alongside Mike's personal Labs on several occasions and noting their great temperaments and hunting abilities. When Mike told me that he has the parents of his pups DNA checked for possible problems before breeding, that further solidified my feeling we were working with the right person. We were very happy when we got the call that "Misty", one of my favorite of Mike's dogs, was going to have a litter. Mike helped us pick the perfect pup based on size, energy, and how we intended to house her. I kept track of the how the puppies were doing weekly, and even visited them several times before weaning, and all I can say is Mike goes above and beyond to make sure his pups get the best care before going to their forever homes. We now have a sweetheart of a black lab named "Bella", who has caught on super quick to her obedience training. Of course, she naturally loves to retrieve, and we are super excited for her upcoming bird and gun introduction training that was included in the price of our puppy . We plan to follow Mike's whole gun dog program because we look forward to our dog's hunting and retrieving skills becoming every bit as good as her mother's. Mike has extremely well bred dogs and a fantastic training program for them. We got a puppy, Molly, from Mike 10 years ago, after hunting with the puppy's mother, Coal. Coal was a fantastic hunter, well mannered, calm and an excellent all-around dog. We wanted a dog just like her, and are 100% satisfied with with Molly. Mike trained Molly and also handled her in HRC hunt tests earning titles in Started and Seasoned. Mike is a highly skilled yet gentle and patient trainer. He understands how to work with each dog and their individual needs, and we have seen fantastic results not only in our dog, but all of the dogs he trains. He loves the dogs and his goal is to make them not only excellent hunters but also excellent family members. He also helped us to be good owners and handlers of Molly. We returned to Mike looking for another puppy, and waited for a litter. We now have Emma, a well mannered, calm pup. At 13 weeks she is retrieving and on her way to becoming an excellent gundog! I’m rating 5 stars because that’s exactly what Sodak kennels deserves. I took my German shorthair pointer “Ellie” there because she was gun shy and didn’t have much bird drive. Mike had a good plan from the start on how to approach Ellie to build good bird drive then work towards the gun. He is very knowledgeable about hunting dogs. The kennels are very nice and clean. Big fenced in yard for the dogs to exercise and retrieve. Great area to plant birds and work with the dog. When I picked Ellie up after her training period was able to go down and watch her work the area and point birds. Mike did a great job and I can’t wait to take Ellie out opening weekend!
