We recently completed a Total Private Obedience Training course with Shawn Cathcart of Smash K9. I say “we” because while the focus of the class was our Lab, the real students were my husband and me. We’ve had many dogs over the last 50+ years, from puppies to seniors, and of many breeds. And, have “trained” them all with the assistance of professional trainers. So, we thought we knew something about training dogs. It turns out over past experiences; we still had a lot to learn. We can say without equivocation that we have never met a trainer with as thorough an understanding of dogs, as Shawn – what makes them tick, what motivates them, what causes various behaviors, how to recognize and overcome their fears, & what exercises to use to build their confidence. Our dog was successfully tested and certified as Canine Good Citizen, AKC Urban CGC, & AKC Community Canine. But, beyond that, what our dog achieved far exceeded our expectations. I urge anyone reading this, whatever your training goal that you might seek for your dog, to sign up for a course with Shawn. You will not regret it.

I rescued a pit mix, Tim, from the Humane Society and looked into obedience training. Smash K9 was a great experience! Shawn and Shari are knowledgeable, patient, and so positive with training. We were given many different situations and taught how to handle Tim in each one. Tim was excited to go to class and has learned so much! Sit, down, place, stay, heel, come—Tim can do it all!
