TL;DR Hire her We’ve tried other trainers, and Bethany is like no other. I’ll give a description of our individual scenario below, but here are some of the game changers if you don’t want to read it all. She explained all her methods no matter how many questions we threw at her, and some of the research indicates some really non intuitive stuff, so this part was very helpful or our scientist/educator selves. And honestly, it was essential for our understanding of how to deal with scenarios that arose when she wasn’t there. She was endlessly understanding with our missteps and hopelessness. She was upfront about the bottom lines - what is great if we can do, but also realistically what the things are that we really needed to focus on given the inevitable time restraints of ‘real life’. She was very clear about what to expect: how long the interventions might take, what to watch for, what we absolutely had to pay attention to in reading our dogs’ behavior, the work that was crucial, the time periods where folks get lax and create potential problem scenarios or regression, and when we were ready to space out sessions or even have a greater pause so we could continue working, and then flexible when we needed to start back up to advance further. She’d sent back up articles, videos if needed. The works. We were experienced enough with training to know we wanted ‘positive training’, but they aren’t all equal. And frankly, we had had previous trainers that just didn’t appear to use research-based training methods past the ‘intimidation doesn’t work and use positive reinforcement’. As scientists and educators, this was essential to us. Bethany knows the research inside and out. She’s worked not only with animals, but even more generally holds degrees that crossover into human behavioral training. (This probably helps in dealing with us! Haha). She was able to interject and correct things we were doing in a way that was kind, informative, and non-judgmental. And honestly, she’s just fun to be around. My dogs also think she’s the best human in the entire world now. So what did she actually have to work with us on? Our two dogs, after years of living together peacefully, began to fight. By the time we called Bethany they couldn’t even see one another from a distance without lunging, and sometimes even causing serious injury. When we started with her, they had to be 100% separated, and we had tried everything we could read on our own. One of the dogs had serious anxiety (shelter life, likely prior abuse, shotgun pellets in her legs when we got her, chronic illness that nearly killed her) that had led to an intense needs for boundaries (esp. of certain painful body areas) and reactionary aggression and the other matured in to a high drive/energy dog with few boundaries and a constant need to appease. She walked us through the every step of the process and was 100% upfront about the long road we had ahead, and it was long. From separate rooms, to muzzle training/acclimation, to impulse control, to reactionary issues, to on leash interactions, to muzzle interactions, to indoor steps, outdoor steps. I’m happy to report that our dogs are best friends again - back to cuddling and grooming. Given that we were never going to get rid of either of the dogs, I can say with absolutely 0 exaggeration that she improved our quality of life more than any other thing we’ve ever paid for.

The behavioral therapist, Bethany Jordan, is a miracle worker! We recently rescued a blind husky, and there were challenges between him and our min-pin.
