Hamsters don't typically carry diseases. Hamsters can die from stress so I'd definitely check out the cage your housing them in first. Large hamsters like teddy bears, short hairs, and fancys do best in a fish tank with no water in it and a matching reptile mesh lid. The smallest size for a large hamster I'd go is a 20gallon long. If your really worried about diseased hamsters from petco, find a breeder. Hamster breeders do exist and are frequently more ethical.

Petco will not take animals in. However they do allow local shelter to adopt thru petco.
