When my wife and I decided to get our son a puppy for his second birthday, our goal was bigger than just bringing home a pet—we wanted them to grow up together. At the same time, I had always wanted a properly trained family protection dog, so finding the right trainer was critical. During my search, one name consistently stood out: Jesse Cortez. From our very first conversation, it was clear he operated at a different level. Jesse didn’t just talk about training—he educated me on the entire process and, more importantly, made sure we were starting with the right dog. He went as far as personally contacting our breeder in Brazil and doing his own due diligence before our puppy had even arrived in the U.S. Shortly after we received our pup, Jesse conducted a full evaluation to determine if he was a suitable candidate for family protection. Once we got the green light, we committed to the program—and that’s where Jesse truly separated himself. Over the next eight months, our dog trained in a structured rotation: two months with Jesse, two months at home, and so on. Throughout that entire time, communication was exceptional. We received consistent updates—photos, videos, texts, and calls—almost daily. If anything came up, we knew immediately. There was never a moment where we felt out of the loop. What stood out even more over time was who Jesse is as a person. He’s not just a trainer—he’s an advocate for the dogs, an educator for the owners, and someone who genuinely cares. He puts everything into his work and ensures every dog is developed the right way—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Today, our dog is two years old and has earned his CGC, CGCA, and CGCU titles, with a PDC trial coming up soon. Even now, Jesse continues to check in, make time for follow-up training, and stay involved. If you’re serious about training—whether it’s basic obedience or high-level personal protection—there’s no one I would recommend more. Jesse and his team at Patriot K9 are simply in a different league.

Mariah worked with two of our dogs. First Soka, who is a dog who suffered clear trauma and has fear aggression. Not only did Mariah get her confidence to a level where she can interact with people and other dogs, she kept her in her own home for her comfort and less stress. Then Maelle. She had severe separation anxiety. Mariah worked with her for weeks to build up her confidence. She brought her to new places, brought her also to her own home to care for her. She came home a new dog!! Amanda and Jesse were very welcoming each time we went to visit the dogs and honestly I can’t speak highly enough about the whole crew. From kennel techs to the trainers.
