I picked up my 16 month old Labrador, Finn, several days ago after three weeks at MDL’s Board & Train program. It’s incredible how much calmer and obedient he is! As I work to re-enforce at home the awesome work that Haley did with Finn, I’m so grateful for the time, attention, and love she, Sarah, and their families showed him during his stay. From pulling me down the sidewalk on our daily walks to walking calmly beside me, and from ignoring my calls to listening to commands, he’s growing into the best version of his sweet self. We enrolled our 1 and a half year old rescue Great Pyrenees named Rusty in the 3 week board and train program. He had no training before we adopted him due to him being an outside dog so he definitely needed some basic obedience and manners. I can say Rusty is now a such a changed good boy!!! This program has made such a difference in his behavior and we feel such at ease about his manners when bringing him on walks and in the house. He can sit, stay, down, and “place” on his mat. He has a great heel and doesn’t tug or pull us anymore when we go on walks. And most importantly he listens to us. Haley and her team did such a great job with him, it was worth everything penny!!

Literally. About three months ago we adopted our nearly 2-year old, 80lb pooch, Gage. Before he came to us, Gage spent 12+ hours a day crated during the first 18 months of his life until his first family decided they could no longer handle him. After unsuccessfully trying to rehome him, his owners surrendered him to a kill shelter in Southwest Virginia. With the end of his time there fast approaching, he was rescued by a foster family, but needed a new home quickly because of his size, energy level, and behavioral challenges. The day his foster family brought him to us we could tell Gage was a sweet boy who had the potential to be a great family dog. He was playful, exuberant, and clearly loved people. Unfortunately, he was also a TOTALLY UNTRAINED TERROR. Before his foster family even left our home, Gage dashed out the door to go meet the neighbors’ dogs, stopping along the way to literally knock a cyclist off his bike. He was totally unwalkable, pulling so hard on his leash that he knocked my wife off her feet. He was a nervous mess, chewing a hole the size of a football in our ottoman. Jumping on you was his way of saying hello. Trying to play, he grabbed our son by the sleeve and pulled him to the ground. His idea of affection was mouthing and, though he didn’t seem to be a biter, having an 80lb dog putting its big jaws around your hand can be pretty unsettling. Luckily, we were able to start training with MDL the week after we adopted our new big boy. Given the challenges Gage had, and the speed with which we needed to address them, we could not have made a better choice. Even after lesson #1, the results were astounding. Within a few days of our first lesson, he had already had fairly good recall. On walks, he’d gone from pulling with all his might leashed to a heavy-duty harness, to strolling manageably on a light leash clipped to a flat collar. After the fourth lesson, we had a dog with reliable recall, even if he was running toward an animal or another dog. He now walks in a perfect heel, sits and stays until released, and has great door/gate manners. We can’t take him to the pet store or hardware store without people commenting about what a well-mannered dog he is. His personality hasn’t changed – he’s lost none of his affability – but he now understands that he gets to have more fun when he looks to us for guidance on how to behave. He also now knows that he doesn’t have to leap on people to get belly rubs, or tug sleeves to solicit a game of fetch (though he still offers a “shake” to most folks he meets). Even as very experienced dog owners, we were afraid we’d gotten in over our head with Gage. There is no way our dog could have achieved the level of results he has so quickly without the expert guidance we’ve received from My Dog Listens.
