After signing my second dog up for J&J’s 12 week program I had the worst experience here. The staff is good, and the owner is wonderful. However, the manager is young, and not the person who should be running the show. It’s one thing to be a good dog trainer, but another to run a business and with that understand finances, business ethics, client retention / satisfaction, etc. There’s a fine line and dog training doesn’t give you those skills. With my move after my fist dog completing the 12 week program and construction being horrible I was doing a daily commute of over 3 hours to get my dog to training and back. After the first week I switched to the 8 week program. When I signed her up for the 12 week it was $1650 with a returning client discount. I paid $1000 up front - $60 went to the training collar and buckle and that left a remaining $940. When I switched to the 8 week I was quoted $1350 (INCLUDING group classes) after the returning client discount. However, without the classes it was going to be $1000 flat. After continuing another 2 weeks and increased job responsibilities I couldn’t afford to be in the car commuting 3 hours a day anymore and needed to end after my 4th week. I can’t jeopardize my job when owning a home, etc. Simple math of an 8 week program that was priced at $1000 with group classes included for $1350 would be $500 split for the 4 week program - being that group classes increased the previous program by $350 - Common math would’ve $1000 given - $60 for collar = $940 - $500 (Half of 8 week quote) to do the 4 weeks = $440 remaining as to which I said keep it for the group classes. I don’t care if group classes are normally a $1000 don’t throw them in as additional $500 ($350 after 10% returning discount due to 8 week program being $1000 of the $1350) for a program that costs $1000 and then get all turned around when you don’t understand the numbers. I was given the run around and it was quite embarrassing and a slap in the face for the 2 dogs I’ve brought since September 2024 and the 3 dogs I’ve referred since end of 2024. One of which did the 12 week program and 2 did the 8 week program. Not to mention they also lived 45 minutes away to start!! But went because of my referral. I was told the “This is putting me in a difficult spot blah blah blah, I have to pay the trainer” bot how much do trainers really make? Even at $20 an hour for one hour of private lesson training a day (one on ones) you’re only looking at a $400 trainee cost over a month. Not to mention I didn’t finish the 4th week because of the unprofessionalism - and the week before my dog missed a day so I could make the morning group class. She spent a total of 15 days there that’s it! The lack of standard business ethics from the manager was embarrassing. Not to mention to make it any more personal - which business should always be business and not personal especially with all the dog business I’ve brought them - the manager removes me off of Facebook which is what I used to see dog updates as the staff there would post them on personal pages and most people who go trainers or clients are all friends on Facebook as we do classes, walks, etc together. The manager should stick to training dogs and not trying to run a business - Diane and the rest of the trainers are great. Long story short I am extremely disappointed with the service this time around, the lack of accountability, finance knowledge in the business and business ethics. I will definitely never recommend a potential client to J&J again due to this incident. I work in corporate America for a group of very large international companies and would NEVER carry myself this way or represent a business this way. A client who’s dogs and referral has brought 5 dogs within a year time frame, reviewed the business, shared the posts on social media, etc is a loss. Hopefully they look into stuff like this and really pay attention - as an owner of a business I definitely wouldn’t want to loose this business, referrals, or have someone who takes things personal running my show.
