I brought my 7 month old German Shepard for board/train. They communicated well with updates with my dog while in training as well as follow up training to acclimate me with her training. I would highly recommend to give your dog the confidence and skills for the lifelong commitment you’ll have with it!

Are there any special tips for training an older dog?
It’s also important to remember that older dogs may have developed some bad habits over the years - especially if they weren’t trained when they were younger. Be patient with them as you work on these habits, and remember to reward them when they do something right - even if it’s just a small improvement.

Our dog seems protective. Do we really need our dog trained for protection for the dog to actually protect our home?
An important point to note is that not all dogs are suitable for protection work. While some breeds, such as German Shepherds or Dobermans, may be naturally inclined towards alertness and guarding behaviors, many of these breeds will require extensive training in order to become reliable protection dogs.

What's your favorite breed of dog to train?
Our favorite breed of dog to train is popular breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers. These breeds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and willingness to learn. We also have many years of experience training Dobermans. We love smaller breed dogs, too. We love training a variety of breeds, including Poodles and Goldendoodles.

Is it better to use positive or negative reinforcement when training a dog?
Balanced training is the most effective way to train any dog. Balanced training consists of both positive reinforcement, such as verbal praise and treats, and corrections, such as verbal reprimands or pauses in play. Positive reinforcement encourages desired behaviors and helps build a strong bond between the trainer and their pup. Corrections provide clear boundaries that help prevent unwanted behaviors.

Our family decided to get a puppy German Shepard and we knew that she was going to be high energy and need a lot of attention. We reached out to Jon about some of the puppy behaviors we were seeing and what we could do to help her get on the right path. We decided to do a 4 week boarding and training package and also have follow up visits afterwards and I have to say we have never been happier! She is listening and learning the things she can and cannot do in the house. I would highly recommend reaching out to Jon if your pup needs a lot or even just minor changes in their behavior. He truly understands the dogs and it isn't like these other facilities that you see where they do group sessions and everything is treat based. He really gets to understand each dog's demeanor and how they react to things. We are very pleased at the attention to detail he spent with our girl and she adores coming back to see him for classes.

We had been in search of a trainer for our rambunctious female German shepherd puppy, Mabel. After an initial consultation with John, he recommended a 4-week board and train program - a suggestion that we had mixed feelings about. The idea of parting with our sweet little girl did make us slightly apprehensive, as this would be her first time in the care of someone else. However, we were immediately put at ease by John's demeanor, his palpable passion for dogs and his professional approach. We made up our minds and embarked on this journey with John and his team. Looking back, we can say without a doubt that it was a decision we'll never regret. The joy Mabel shows each time we return for the follow-up sessions speaks volumes about the friendly environment and loving care she received there. The follow-up sessions that are included after the board and train program was an aspect we found particularly helpful. These sessions have proved to be invaluable in helping us understand how to strengthen Mabel's training and ensure a consistent approach at home. The overall training went far beyond our expectations. Not only has Mabel morphed into a well-mannered, well-behaved German shepherd under John's expert guidance, but the program also instills the necessary skills and knowledge in us as owners to maintain this progress. The communication while Mabel was boarding was exceptional. We received frequent updates, and the shared videos of training sessions done during her stay have been a great reference point for us now that she's back home. To sum it up, John and his amazing team didn't just train Mabel; they offered a holistic program that has proved to be transformative for us as pet parents as well. We wholeheartedly recommend John's training program to any dog parents seeking a comprehensive, engaging, and effective training plan for their dog.
