Are there any special tips for training an older dog?
It’s also important to remember that older dogs may have developed some bad habits over the years - especially if they weren’t trained when they were younger. Be patient with them as you work on these habits, and remember to reward them when they do something right - even if it’s just a small improvement.

Does every breed of dog have different training needs and challenges?
Every dog is different and requires tailored training methods to achieve the best results. For example, some breeds may respond better to positive reinforcement techniques like verbal praise or treats, while others may require more structure and discipline in order to learn. Size, age, temperament and breed can all affect a dog's training needs and challenges.

Our dog seems protective. Do we really need our dog trained for protection for the dog to actually protect our home?
An important point to note is that not all dogs are suitable for protection work. While some breeds, such as German Shepherds or Dobermans, may be naturally inclined towards alertness and guarding behaviors, many of these breeds will require extensive training in order to become reliable protection dogs.

Our favorite breed of dog to train is popular breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers. These breeds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and willingness to learn. We also have many years of experience training Dobermans. We love smaller breed dogs, too. We love training a variety of breeds, including Poodles and Goldendoodles.

Is it better to use positive or negative reinforcement when training a dog?
Balanced training is the most effective way to train any dog. Balanced training consists of both positive reinforcement, such as verbal praise and treats, and corrections, such as verbal reprimands or pauses in play. Positive reinforcement encourages desired behaviors and helps build a strong bond between the trainer and their pup. Corrections provide clear boundaries that help prevent unwanted behaviors.

It is possible to train a dog to be a service animal, but it depends on the breed of dog and the individual animal's unique personality traits. Before beginning any training for service work, it is essential to conduct an evaluation of the dog's suitability for such a role.

Is it better to use treats or verbal rewards when training dogs?
Balanced training is an important factor to consider when it comes to dog training. We always tailor training to the specific needs of that specific dog and not always one tool entirely over the other.

John and his team are the best in the business. After 6 weeks of boarding and training, our Rottweiler Hachi came back home a completely different dog. He follows directions, stopped chewing on objects he gets his hand on, and his overall behavior improved tremendously.
During the 6 weeks, John kept in touch with us sharing progress of the training including pics and videos.
When we picked up Hachi, he was in great shape both physically and mentally.
At the end of the program, John kept in touch with us following up on Hachi.
We highly recommend John and his team.

I can not stress enough how happy I am with John and his team! I brought my 2.5 year old Belgian Malinois, Roy, to Happy Dogs Boarding and Training to get help with his reactivity towards children and other dogs. From my first visit it was apparent that John was very in tune with dog behavior and temperament. We had 4 visits prior to bringing him in for his 4 week board and train and 4 follow up lessons. When I picked up Roy I could see a change in him immediately. He still had his same energy and confidence that I love about him, but he was now more responsive to commands and stays focused on me when in the presence of dogs, children and other distractions. When picking him up I was given instructions on how to continue his training once I brought him home and with just a couple 10-15 minute sessions a day, he never missed a beat. I can take Roy with me anywhere now and be confident that I will be able handle him no matter what distractions come our way. I cant recommend Happy Dogs Boarding and Training enough for anyone who wants to have a better relationship and live a more fulfilling life with their dog!

In February of this year I was in search for an obedience trainer for my 5 year old black lab Lola. John came highly recommended from a friend of mine. From the beginning, John was patient, upfront with all possible fees, and gave me realistic expectations.
While speaking with him we decided on a schedule that was best suited for Lola. Throughout the duration of her training he sent videos, and progress updates. I was amazed at how well he handled her and how she responded.
After the training she was a completely different dog; she is more obedient, she listens for commands, she has and all around improved personality. The follow up classes really helped me to be able to communicate with Lola in a way that she understands so she can execute my commands.
I am very grateful to John and his staff for taking great care of Lola. I know that Lola can be very rambunctious lol but they had so much patience and care. I highly recommend him.
