Giant Schnauzers are not a mainstream breed…and even when you see them, most are not from working genetics…but yours is which adds to the complexity of creating the proper short term and long term plan to achieve success both from a relationship point of view and a performance one. They are a guardian/protection breed (depending on specific bloodlines) that come with a particular “blue print” on how things should go and be dealt with…ie Mother Nature has a strong opinion/influence from birth. These type of dogs need to have their genetics understood in order to offset them in a fair, respectful and successful manner without trying to change them into something they are not. If one puts in the proper time to become a trusted team leader, teach expectations and is fair in the upholding of rules, boundaries and structure…you will have a family member who will love you without question, look to you for guidance, yet will not hesitate to protect you at all costs. We have truly enjoyed and look forward to continuing the work we have started to create the team dynamic you want at the end of the day.

Much of our work is understanding the genetics and personality in play…and then translating that into a plan that the owner/handler understands. If one wants a well oiled machine/team dynamic…all parts need to be addressed. In a lot of cases that means spending a great deal of time focusing on the human component…especially if we ultimately want the human to be the trusted and respected leader within the team dynamic. We have always instilled on clients two important adages: WE ARE TEACHING HUMANS, NOT TRAINING DOGS; and A DOG WILL ONLY BE AS GOOD AS THE HUMAN GUIDING THEM. By putting in the work to turn into trusted leaders, you have…and will continue to see improvement and success. We will continue to support and help guide you in whatever you need help with.

We have strived to be the best at what we do and have built what we are today on referrals from clients who have trusted us to help them with their dogs. George is a great example of a dog that his breed/genetics are a double edged sword. If one does not understand that breeds are created to have different filter systems and interpretations of situations…there can be a lot of misunderstanding between human and dog. Once you understood what he needed as a dog, as a breed and as an individual, you were able to make the adjustments to become a fair leader he looked to for guidance. This creates not only a successful outcome…but one that accomplishes those goals without trying to suppress or change who George is. I look forward to being part of the continuing success.

In many cases people have the pieces to the puzzle, but were not given the knowledge to arrange the pieces in a manner that accomplished their goals. The difference between “trainable” and “untrainable” or success and failure often times comes down to understanding genetics, psychology and the science of learning…but also how all of those things need to be applied in the appropriate intensity for the human/dog team in front of us. The dog needs to understand and trust…the human needs to understand and trust…one can’t just concentrate on one component if the goal is for all the pieces to work together.
