Questions & answers

What people have asked about this business.

What are the best options for training for my new puppy?

That's a great question! Puppy socialization is VERY important. Puppies are learning a lot about the world from about 8-14 weeks during their "critical socialization period," so it's very important that they start doing things and meeting people early. We want to keep puppies safe until they're vaccinated, but puppy classes are a very safe way to start training and socializing as early as 8 weeks. Our puppy classes will teach basic skills like how to sit, drop it, and walking on leash. Puppy Kindergarten will also cover topics like how to stop puppies from biting, potty training, preventing puppies from chewing on things they shouldn't, and avoiding other future problems. Puppy training classes also provide socialization with other puppies to help them learn appropriate play, as well as meeting new people in a safe environment (again, puppies do not have to be fully vaccinated to start puppy classes!). We can also set up private training sessions for puppies!

Question on Google
What kind of training methods do you use?

We use positive reinforcement based methods in all of our training. There are a lot of labels/terms out there, like force free, rewards based, science based, ethical training, Fear Free- and those are all good terms for what we do! Our trainers look for ways to reinforce behavior we like (walking on leash, sitting, waiting for the food bowl, etc), and find alternatives and management strategies to reduce behavior we don't like (chewing on furniture, barking, pulling on leash, etc). We do not use pain, discomfort, or fear in our training. That means we avoid tools like prong or shock collars, and look for the kindest AND most effective strategies when working with behavior. Our trainers are constantly learning from experts and gaining standardized certifications so you know their level of expertise.

Question on Google
Do you offer financial support or discounts?

We do! As part of our mission to make training/behavior support available to EVERYONE, we offer financial assistance on all of our training. It's super easy to request financial aid- there's a form on the website (on all training pages!) for your name and email. Then you get an automated email back with codes for different levels of financial aid, so you can use them to book group classes or private training. And if you need more help, you can email us to figure out what will work for you. We do sometimes offer discounts for specific promotions, but our financial assistance is the best bet if you're struggling financially.

Question on Google
Where are your group classes held?

Our in-person group dog training classes are held at two locations: at our Community Center (north) and Work and Woof (south). This means folks can attend classes without having to cross the river! Agility classes are only held at our north location, but most classes are held at both/either. We also offer online/virtual dog training classes taught by experts from Austin and around the country.

Question on Google
What kinds of classes do you offer?

We offer SO MANY types of classes! -Puppy training classes include Puppy Kindergarten (puppies 8-14 weeks) and Puppy First Grade (puppies 4-6 months). These are great for socialization and setting puppies up for success around issues like potty training, puppy biting/teething, etc. -Basic manners/obedience classes as well as intermediate and advanced manners, or Canine Good Citizen (CGC) classes and testing -Agility classes! This dog sport is awesome for exploring obstacles and doing something fun. -Fun options like nosework/scentwork (nose work is great for helping give dogs a job!), or working on specific skills like recalls/coming when called or leash walking without pulling. -Specialty behavior classes like Confidence Building (in-person) or separation anxiety class (virtual). Check the Classes page on our website for the most updated list of current classes!

Question on Google
Why try dog agility training?

There are so many reasons to try agility! 1- It's a super fun dog sport all about going over/through obstacles. You've got to work on speed and accuracy, and it's tons of fun for people and dogs. 2- our training center is indoors and temperature controlled, so you can do agility on rainy days or hot summer days with no problems. 3- we can modify the sport for you and your dog. We offer puppy agility classes where all obstacles are lowered (to prevent any impacts on developing puppy bones), classes for those who want to get really good at the sport, and low-key options for those who want to build some confidence. 4- it's a great way to hone some traditional obedience cues in a more fun way! Your pup will be working on skills like recalls, downs, stays, etc and learning to really listen to you. 5- you can do it with a group or on your own! If you have a reactive dog, you can still totally do agility with us in private sessions! As always, we offer financial assistance.

Question on Google
Is Every Dog a nonprofit? What does that mean? Is the training free?

We are a 501c3 nonprofit! This means that we're a community organization with a mission to provide inclusive, accessible dog training and behavior resources to the community. Our training isn't free, but we offer financial assistance on all of our private training and group training classes for anyone in need. We also have free webinars and a library of free resources (articles, videos, etc) that anyone can access. We work with local groups to make sure you have access to as much great training information as possible. Googling dog training advice can bring up a lot of information (a lot of it BAD information!!) so our website is a great place to look for resources that have been vetted by certified trainers and behavior consultants.

It’s an amazing place with amazing trainers! My last class was with Eric, and he is excellent! He uses a variety of relevant examples to explain his lessons, making each class interesting and fun. He demonstrates great versatility and can quickly adapt to our dog’s needs.

We loved our training experience with Every Dog! Our pup was enrolled in puppy kindergarten and just graduated yesterday. We were so impressed with how quickly she picked up on some of the lessons, and we feel so much more confident as new puppy owners having had this training. Looking forward to puppy first grade!

I took my dog, Wrex, to the basic manners class. He learned a lot, especially with the distraction of having other dogs and people in the room (which is good!) Joanna was a great teacher, and she gave us a lot of helpful information and advice. I’m glad we were able to take this class.

Worked with Kay and I can't recommend her or Every Dog enough! Kay met my shy and at times reactive pup where he was. She never pushed him and we slowly worked on his confidence and reactivity. By the time our training concluded, my pup was not only obsessed with Kay, but I was armed with the knowledge and skills to better handle my pup in difficult situations. The confidence Kay gave me, as well as the support, was truly invaluable. I am forever grateful to Kay and Every Dog and would highly recommend them to anyone. They also offer financial assistance so cost does not have to be a barrier in getting help. 10/10 experience!
