That’s incredible!” Those were some of my first words spoken to Pat Burns. I had just watched Pat coach a handler and dog team on a very technical water blind that just minutes before the handler was unsure on their prospects for finishing. Confidence, the second of many tools Pat has given me. That confidence comes from going a little beyond and getting a little uncomfortable so that when it counts there is no doubt in you or your dogs minds of the ability to earn that pass. A few days earlier I had emailed Elite Retriever Training about joining in on some training after receiving Pats information from a mutual friend. My email included the fact that I was interested in running hunt tests in the future. The words novice and Boykin Spaniel did not bear any weight with Pat and I received a quick response. Along with some details, where and when on his next workshop, the email opened with the word “ABSOLUTLEY”. This was the first lesson I learned from Pat. It is absolutely possible to accomplish any goal with your dog if you put in the effort and time. “That’s incredible!” These were some of my more recent words spoken to Pat. I had just finished a blind that was a step above the class I was training to obtain a title in. Obtaining success with Pat’s modified field trial tactics we went two for two and earned that title ribbon the following weekend. Lately I have been fortunate to participate in a couple of Pat’s workshops every year and I am impressed at how much improvement is achieved in such a short time. But true to his dedication of helping his clients continue to grow, I always leave with lessons to recall and specific drills and setups to run.
