Hi Sherri! I am almost certain you did not call my business as this is not the protocol I would recommend. I stand by the use of ecollars as a viable and humane way to manage reactivity, particularly paired with a program of traditional obedience based around proven leash handling, which is what I always suggest. The use of strict positive reinforcement in the context of instinctive, drive based behaviors has been demonstrated ineffective (See the "Misbehavior of Organisms, Breland and Breland, 1961). Oftentimes dogs in high drive and aggression are disinterested in food until redirected through either leashwork or ecollar work, at which point once they have returned to a thinking state they can be rewarded for self control and professionalism around whatever they are aggressing towards. I believe perhaps you were speaking to a different trainer if the suggestion was merely to put shock collars on them and let that work out, as my plan for fence fighting is nuanced and based in patience, developing language ability in the dog, and building confidence in the owner to handle dogs in a potentially dangerous situation. This person has never been my client (in fact, I've never even spoken to her or seen her) and works for a local dog trainer who is a hoarder who recently had 106 dogs pulled from her house in filthy, neglected condition. I was involved in the prosecution of this case, so this is simply conflict of interest.
