Dog Basics PDX

We called Dog basics to help with a few things. Firstly, we were getting a new dog and our dog gets anxious when meeting new dog friends. Timothy was amazing, he showed us exactly what to do in order to make sure the intro went smoothly. They are now amazing friends, wrestling and cuddling together after just a couple of weeks. He also helped us with leash training and leash reactivity. After one session I knew exactly what to do to train our dog regarding reactivity. I really appreciate and love his approach to dog training. He truly believes in letting dogs be dogs, respecting their instincts, and positive behavior reinforcement, and the exact moment when to give that positive reinforcement. He shows you how to develop the relationship with your dogs that build trust. Highly recommended!

I found Dog Basics by a recommendation and I'm so glad I did! The trainer is very friendly and knows how to explain things in a manner that you'll understand. He has been so helpful in giving me insight about what my dog needs from me in order to succeed and I'm very grateful for that. Sniper can have difficulties meeting new people and with the trainer it was as if they had known each other! The progress we've made because of this, has been enormous! We have had 2 training sessions with Timothy for our new small, two year old rescue dog, JB. One inside our home and one outside, adjacent to a dog park. We have another older dog also. Inside our home, Timothy taught us how to prevent our dogs from going over their excitement threshhold when someone knocks on the door. JB specifically has shown a lot of anxiety when people come inside our house. Timothy taught us how to calm her down her and what to do if she barked at our guests during in the visit. Since that session we have had three evenings with guests in our home and JB has been able to be calm, with no barking. Outside, she has been fearful or overexcited when she sees, or is approached by other dogs. Timothy taught us how to recognize when she was scared or stressed as opposed to just having fun, and what to do to keep her from reaching a threshold in those situations. Timothy's approach is very clear and understandable. He is really good at using examples from human behavior to make a connection to how dogs respond to situations. He was also a lot of fun and very positive with both the dogs and us, as their owners. We learned so much in these 2 sessions and we feel like we have a much better understanding of JB's behavior and how to move forward. Overall, an excellent experience with a warm, fun, knowledgable trainer.
