Sigh, Here is an example of not going with our gut as Trainers. Lesson learned; never agree to accept a dog/puppy for board and train when the training is a gift to someone else whom you have not had the chance to discuss whether 1) they want training and 2) are they in agreement with your training methodology. This young man’s mother reached out to us about training her son’s puppy. I will refrain from sharing what she wrote in her contact form out of respect, it will suffice to say that mom strongly thought the puppy needed professional training. Former clients occasionally pay for their child’s dog training. This second generation of clients are always excited to bring their dogs to us, knowing what great work our team delivers, having seen their parent’s dog’s success. This is the first time we accepted a puppy/dog in for training, whose parent was paying for the training, but wasn’t already a former client. When mother and son arrived to drop Aela off, the son had clearly not been educated in balanced training methodology and did not seem to be a fan of our training tools. The son expressed his distain of ecollars in a very disrespectful manner, assuming it would hurt his dog. We brought out an ecollar out and explained how we use it, and even let him feel what a typical working level is on his arm. We asked if he could feel it, he said no, but still seemed to think it would hurt his dog. At this, we immediately let him know that we are not the right trainers for you then, and would not be accepting his puppy for training. At the behest and assurance of his mother that she would see to it that her son would follow through with his puppy’s training, we reluctantly agreed to accept Aela. Kudos to Mom, for being willing to invest in the puppy’s future as she felt strongly we were the right Trainers! Anyone that follows us on social media can see the before and after video of this puppy that was taken about 30 minutes after she arrived. Here is a link to it: https://www.facebook.com/272269452976346/posts/1691878391015438/ Aela went from pulling like a bulldozer to already heeling politely after she was properly introduced to her prong collar on her first day here. Hmm, which tool was used in an “untrained and unprofessional” manner? The collar she arrived with, causing her to choke herself by pulling so hard, or the prong collar we used to teach her to walk with a loose leash, no pulling, no choking? We are confident that anyone that has researched our company, spoken to us about our training methodology, viewed our transparency through our social media content, and read our many positive reviews, will realize this young man’s assumption that we use prong collars to “jerk” dogs around as a method of training, is simply a preconceived and uneducated idea of how a prong collar is used in balanced training. As to the picture, it isn’t clear what the mark is, or where on the puppy it is. Since the puppy has been home, how can it be determined where the puppy was or how this mark occurred? Did she scratch herself, was the puppy playing rough with another dog after going home? When Aela went into heat during the first week with us, we called the family to come pick her up, letting them know we would reschedule the remainder of her training when her heat was over. We were going to conduct a mini pick up session, so the family could be coached on how to use a prong collar for verbal reinforcement, introduction to place work and leash manners. Upon bringing Aela out to be reunited with mother and son, he let out an expletive when feeling her prong collar on Aela. Realizing that this young man was never going to accept balanced training tools or methodology, Lenny told them that we would not continue with training in the future and rather, we would refund the Mother the difference for the remaining days the puppy would not be with us. Our team was sad to see sweet Aela go and we wish her the best!
