Lisa, I understand your frustration and apologize that the situation with Bailey has caused you additional distress. As we discussed at your complimentary consultation on May 1st at 1:30pm, Bailey has some severely fearful tendencies. We discussed that he has come a long way in overcoming these issues, but that ultimately that could preclude him from becoming a service animal. You stated that he is more comfortable and confident in public than at your house, so I agreed to meet with you again at a public place free of charge to evaluate him in public. I also expressed concern about his age (8 years old) and that he was a bit too mature to begin service dog training and I advised that your best interest would be to pursue a new dog as a prospect. We agreed that since he had already completed some obedience training, that we could work with him on some tasks and the training process would not take as long as if you were starting from scratch. When we met on May 11th at 3pm, we walked around the Home Depot store in Hamilton Mill to allow me to observe his interaction with people in a public setting. We walked around for approximately 20 minutes and I observed that Bailey was somewhat tense, but he seemed to handle being out and about without too much extreme stress. He did not want to be approached by anyone and actively tried to move away from anyone who spoke to, moved towards, or looked at him. However, he seemed to recover quickly from anything that caused him fear, thus making me hopeful of his future in training. As we were setting up your first lesson to begin working with him, a man tried to approach and solicit attention from Bailey which caused him to try to hide behind you. I expressed concern at this, but I was assured by you that if presented with a stressful situation such as this, that Bailey would not lash out and would attempt to avoid all contact. We proceeded with setting up your lesson on the understanding that we were "cautiously optimistic " for Bailey's future in service dog training and that nothing was guaranteed as far as his suitability for service work. Once we scheduled the lesson and left, I did have some misgivings on pursuing service dog training with Bailey, but I decided to at least give you and him a couple of lessons to see how his behavior progressed. Just before your first lesson, you sent me a message that stated "I am sorry but I need to cancel my training session for next week. All the people talking to me and asking me questions when I have Bailey with me is causing me way too much stress." I responded with an acknowledgement of your message and letting you know you could contact me with further questions or concerns. A few days later you recanted and attempted to get in touch with me to begin training Bailey. I felt that it would not be right for me to pursue training with him due to his age and fear, however I had not made a final decision to that effect. I dealt with some personal health issues as well as having to be out of town for a bit, therefore my response to your further inquiry was delayed. When I responded to your inquiries I sent an email apologizing for the delay and letting you know my feelings as to Bailey's temperament and his ability to become a service dog. Again, I apologize that this upset you, but I feel that this is what's right for him. In addition, I've offered to assist you in selecting a new dog for a service dog prospect as well as potentially training said dog.
