Our doggie daycare told us our dog was aggressive and needed training. She recommended Athens Dog Training. We signed up for both in home training and group training. Our in home trainer, Pohan, is absolutely wonderful! She even let her dog play with mine and explained what is aggressive behavior versus large puppies playing. We met four trainers in various group training classes that explained our dog’s behavior as well as what we need to do differently. The best part is that all five trainers confirmed our Rottweiler puppy is NOT aggressive, he’s just a sweet puppy. I recommend Athens Dog Training to everyone!! Being told your Rott puppy is aggressive is upsetting and Athens proved to us that he’s not.

We've been taking our dog (Fozzie) to Athens since we've adopted him. We opted for the 6-month package over the 6-class package, which we would really recommend. Fozzie went from being bark-y, reactive, and distractive to being dramatically less bark-y and able to follow a really important set of commands. We've been working with Pohan from day one, and she has always been really invested in us as owners and Fozzie's development. We felt like she genuinely cared about his progress. If you're willing to put in the work (in and out of class), this is a fantastic dog training for dog socializing and ironing out any obedience issues.

Eager to find an above-average puppy/dog training program for my new pup, I called my vet’s office. They recommended several, but said Athens was the best. Much later, I remembered Athens had also been recommended by the day-play/boarding facility we had depended upon for our recently-deceased husky. Although my expectations were quite high when we began our first session, Athens exceeded them in every way. The opportunity for supervised interaction with other dogs made the group classes ideal in both price and practice. As an added bonus, trainers were ever-available to address clients’ specific concerns about their dogs’ specific behaviors one-on-one. I especially appreciated the time and attention devoted to: explaining how and why dogs do what they do, how and why our responses encourage desired behaviors while discouraging undesirable ones, and how to “read” what specific canine behaviors might be expressing under certain circumstances. The in-person group classes are ongoing so, upon signing up for any of the 6-class series, the start date and end date are at the client’s discretion within a one-year period. Several choices for location and day of the week are also available. Since I hope to have my puppy eventually certified as a Therapy Dog (to visit hospital patients, retirement-home residents, students, etc.) I was amazed by how closely Athens’ philosophy lines up with that of the Therapy Dog Association which will be testing and observing me and my dog. Certification requires that my dog trust me, perceive me as an advocate, and check in with me frequently for assurance and direction. Although we have only completed the first series of 6 classes (Puppy Pre-School Obedience), my pup and I are already well on our way to that type of relationship. Because both basic and supplemental classes are offered through on-line videos, I decided to sign up for one between our in-person sessions. I couldn’t decide whether to concentrate on curtailing specific problem behaviors (like biting, digging, and barking) or on learning tricks that might have value for a therapy dog. The decision was made for me when I noticed a flat fee (less than the sum of fees for the two classes I was most interested in) which would give me life-time access to ALL current and future on-line classes. So far, I’ve been quite pleased with the videos, but they’re no substitute for the in-person classes where our dogs learn to get comfortable meeting and greeting one another while we learn so much from the behaviors of other dogs and suggested client responses to those behaviors.

I have had several dogs in the past and hadn’t run into many problems but Moji was a special challenge. So we went to see Rochelle at Athens Dog Training for lessons in dog reactive training. I expected it to involve taking Moji to Rochelle and she would fix her. I found out that’s not how the process works. Rochelle taught me to be aware of Moji’s behaviors and reactions and suggested effective ways to respond- often very different from what I had been doing and much more successful. I learned the right tools, the right preparation and best responses. It didn’t involve boring practice sessions, it was just learning a different way of interacting my dog. The process was gradual and has slowly improved over time since our work with Rochelle. Looking back and remembering how Moji and I interacted before we met Rochelle, I realize how far we have come. I enjoy Moji so much more since our training sessions. She was a handful but after working together with Rochelle she is now a delightful dog. Before we went to the training I was ready to give up and give Moji to my daughter or take her back to the shelter. I can’t imagine giving her up now. Thanks Rochelle!
