I am posting this for my parents. Have you ever considered sending your dog away for several weeks of training but couldn’t bring yourself to do it? That was me. I had so many concerns. How would the trainer treat my dog when I wasn’t there? How could I leave him for several weeks without seeing him? Would he be scared or unhappy? Then I found DeWayne Cabel, owner and trainer of Anchor Up K9 Academy in Chesapeake, Virginia, and he completely put my fears to rest. Before making any commitment, I asked DeWayne to come meet us and our dog so we could ask questions and learn more about his training program. During that visit, he took the time to explain not only how his program works, but how he builds a relationship with the dogs he trains. I immediately felt more comfortable. One of the things I appreciated most was the communication while our dog was away. Every single day—seven days a week—we received a video “report card” showing our dog’s training session and progress. Those videos made such a difference. You can actually see how DeWayne interacts with your dog, and it quickly becomes obvious how patient, caring, and loving he is with the animals he trains. He is truly a dog person. When the training is complete, your dog comes home with the training items DeWayne used as well as a detailed booklet containing the commands your dog learned, explanations of how to use them, and answers to frequently asked questions. This is especially helpful because the training doesn’t simply end when your dog comes home. One of the most important things DeWayne emphasizes is that he is still there for you after the program is over. Dogs change, mature, and sometimes develop new behaviors. His message to owners is simple: “DON’T STRUGGLE WITH SOMETHING—REACH OUT TO ME.” And he truly means it. Our dog improved 100%. Of course, maintaining that success also requires the owner to be consistent and continue using the commands and techniques DeWayne taught. If you run into a problem, he encourages you to call rather than struggle with it on your own. Sending your dog away for several weeks can be an emotional decision, especially when you love your pet like a member of the family. For us, the daily videos provided tremendous peace of mind because we could see not only our dog’s progress, but also the patience and affection DeWayne showed him. We adopted a dog and the only history the shelter could give us was that she was surrendered as a stray that had been living on the streets for about 2 weeks. She terribly underweight and unsure of people and her surroundings. A very nervous dog with a broken spirit. She began to show some concerning behaviors about a month after being in our home. Dewayne and his family were great. My Bernese Mountain Dog Mabel is just a puppy at 10 months but she is strong and had bad manners. She did a 4 week board and train with Dwayne. She has come back a different dog. The jumping on people has a pretty much stopped all together. She is no obeying voice commands.
